Hot Bats Lead to Doubleheader Sweep in Softball Home Opener

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes started hot with three runs in the first inning and did not let up on their way to a doubleheader sweep, Friday, against Bryant.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kate Powers opened the game striking out the Bulldogs' leadoff batter.
  • Caitlyn Frederick was the first on base with a bunt in the bottom of the first.
  • After Vanessa Meyers walked, Mary Kate Murray slammed the ball over the trees behind left field for a three-run homer.
  • Bryant tallied their first hit in the top of the third.
  • Both Taylor Quinn and Frederick got on base with a walk in the bottom of the third before scoring a run each.
  • The Great Danes held their 5-0 lead through the fourth inning and into the fifth.
  • Powers struck out all three batters in the top of the fifth.
  • Murray hit a sacrifice fly to center field as Deanna Grahek scored to give UAlbany its sixth run in the bottom of the fifth.

  • Caitlyn Frederick and redshirt-senior Victoria Vilarchao went 3-4 to lead all batters. Both hit one double and two singles with at least one RBI.
  • Charlotte Lomb went 2-3 with two doubles for three RBI with two runs scored.
  • Eight of the nine starters hit at least once with at least an additional RBI or run scored.
  • Freshman Hailey Errichiello pitched the complete game with six strikeouts in six innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany started strong with a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The leadoff batter, Taylor Quinn, opened the game with an outfield single.
  • Caitlyn Frederick answered with another single before Vanessa Meyers attempted a bunt to advance the runners and put two in scoring position.
  • On a hard hit to shortstop, Mary Kate Murray got on base and brought Quinn home.
  • With the bases loaded, Victoria Vilarchao hit a single up the middle for an RBI before Charlotte Lomb brought all three runners home with a double deep into right field.
  • Bryant opened the second inning with a single but Deanna Grahek caught a line drive with a dive and crawled the final two steps to collect a double play on her own and end the inning.
  • The Bulldogs added two runs in the top of the third and UAlbany answered with three additional runs in the bottom of the third.
  • The Great Danes loaded the bases with a single from Vilarchao, a double from junior Sara Anderson, and a walk for Lomb.
  • Sophomore Kristina Langdon, pinch-hitting, grabbed an RBI as she brought freshman Jenny Nardelli, running for Vilarchao, home.
  • Quinn and Frederick each added an RBI with a sac fly and a double, respectively.
  • After nearly three scoreless innings, the Great Danes won the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to make it a 10-2 decision.
  • Grahek started with a single before Vilarchao hit a double deep into right field to bring Grahek home from first.
  • After a double, Lomb scored from a single up the middle from Christie Collins for the game-winning run.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to close the weekend series with a single game on Saturday (Mar. 29) at noon.
