Men’s Basketball Falls Late in Northern Classic Opener

Score: UAlbany 67, Colgate 69

Location: Place Bell Arena | Laval, Quebec, Canada

Records: UAlbany (2-5, 0-0 America East), Colgate (3-4, 0-0 Patriot League)

Short Story: In its Northern Classic opener in Laval, Quebec, UAlbany men's basketball led for the majority of the night and held a double-digit second half advantage before Colgate edged out a 69-67 final.

Head Coach Dwayne Killings: "Heartbreaking loss to a really good Colgate team. We played well in the first half but never put them away in the second. We battled back, got the ball with six seconds left, and one of our best players [Amir Lindsey] got a good look. It just did not fall. Colgate is a really good team, and we were not fortunate enough to beat them tonight."

  • Okeke scored twice inside in the closing minutes and Abidde added a transition finish to send UAlbany into halftime leading 36-28.
  • To start the second half, Matulu scored on a drive to give UAlbany a 38-28 advantage, its largest of the game.
  • Colgate chipped away with perimeter shooting and second-chance points to close the gap, eventually trimming the lead to one.
  • UAlbany answered as Okeke scored at the rim and Matulu buried a three to regain a 60-59 advantage with under six minutes to play.
  • The Great Danes continued to generate good looks around the rim, with Okeke adding two more finishes to keep the margin within one possession.
  • Colgate moved in front during the final three minutes with a series of late second-chance baskets that made it 68-62.
  • Lindsey responded with a deep three at 2:36 to cut it to 68-65.
