Women’s Basketball Totals Over 20 Assists in Victory Against Binghamton

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes used a consistent offense and true teamwork to surpass 70 points in a 24-point victory, Saturday.
 
COACH COLLEEN MULLEN:
"Today was a complete team effort and I am proud of the way we executed the game plan. Offensively, we moved and shared the ball. Our team's culture and unselfishness definitely showed today. On the defensive end, we did a great job of limiting Binghamton's paint touches and finishing possessions."
 
KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Kayla Cooper led with 20 points and seven assists while shooting 9-16 from the field.
  • Fellow graduate student Kaci Donovan notched her first career double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Two additional Great Danes totaled at least 10 points - graduate student Lilly Phillips (11) and senior Meghan Huerter (10).
  • Freshman Delanie Hill added five assists and a team-high two steals.
  • As a team, UAlbany totaled 24 assists while shooting 50% from the field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first five minutes of action contained back-and-forth scoring with Binghamton holding a one-point lead, 9-8, at 4:48.
  • Meghan Huerter, Jessica Tomasetti, and Kayla Cooper combined for eight consecutive points to give the Great Danes a seven-point advantage two minutes later.
  • In the final two minutes of the first quarter, UAlbany extended their lead with two three-pointers from Martina Borrellas and Lilly Phillips.
  • Kaci Donovan and Laycee Drake opened the second with two three-point field goals to give UAlbany a 14-point advantage just over one minute into the quarter.
  • The Bearcats answered with a scoring run while holding UAlbany scoreless for over three minutes.
  • After Binghamton had sliced the Great Danes' advantage in half, UAlbany pushed back with an 11-2 scoring run throughout the second half of the second quarter.
  • Scoring 22 points in the first quarter and 19 in the second, the Great Danes led 41-25 at halftime.
  • UAlbany came back from the break strong and allowed just two Binghamton field goals in five minutes while scoring 15 points.
  • The tides changed in the final four minutes of the quarter as the Bearcat defense held off all Great Dane advances and closed the scoring gap with eight points. 
  • Meghan Huerter ended the quarter with two made free throws - the only UAlbany points in nearly four minutes.
  • Up 60-38 to start the fourth, Donovan scored the first Great Dane field goal in nearly six minutes of action at 8:06.
  • UAlbany continued to extend their lead until they owned a 27-point advantage, 74-47, with about three and a half minutes left.
  • Binghamton added seven more points but it wasn't enough as the Great Danes got the last say with field goals from freshmen MaKayla Noble and Emma Hákonardóttir.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will head on the road for three games in two weeks - UMBC (1/23), NJIT (1/25), and Binghamton (2/1).
