ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany football program has announced the additions of Mikal Myers and Cameron Gibson to the team's staff. Myers will serve as the team's new Defensive Line Coach, Gibson will serve as a Defensive Assistant.

Greg Gattuso. "It's great to add somebody with Mikal's playing experience and coaching pedigree to the defensive line group, he fits our philosophy perfectly. In Cam we are adding a young and talented coach with a strong work ethic to assist with the defense as a whole. It's great to welcome both of these men to the Capital Region as our team works on winning another CAA title."

Myers joins the Great Danes after having served as a Defensive Line Coach for the University of New Haven. There, Myers assisted the head coach in developing the defensive game strategy and designing effective and efficient training and practices for both the team and individual student-athletes. Myers conducted film review from practices and games, tracked and evaluated the NCAA transfer portal, and served as the team's pro liaison. Myers has also spent time with Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) foe Maine as a Defensive Tackles Coach and with American International as a Graduate Assistant Linebackers Coach prior to his tenure at New Haven.

Prior to his coaching journey, Myers was a standout defensive lineman for the University of Connecticut. In five seasons with the Huskies, he played in 45 games while making 15 starts. He was named a team captain his final season, where he registered 51 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles. He was the 2016 recipient of the Kendall Madison Award, which is given to a strong player whose dedication, hard work, and outstanding citizenship best exemplify the strong spirit of the UConn Huskies. Myers received an invitation to the 2017 College Gridiron Showcase and an invitation to the Baltimore Ravens camp that same year.

Gibson comes north to the Capital Region after having spent time at Marist College as both a student-athlete and a coach He was a four-year letter winner with the Red Foxes where he earned his bachelor's degree. He spent two seasons with the program as a graduate assistant, where he assisted the defensive coaching staff, specifically focusing on the Marist secondary.

After earning his master's Gibson was named the team's Safeties Coach and Special Teams Coordinator in 2019 – a role that he served until coming to UAlbany. In that role, Gibson was tasked with leading the entire safeties position group and coordinating all special teams in-game calls and operations. He provided individual player counseling and evaluation, organized community service opportunities for his position groups, and was responsible for recruiting prospective players from the Georgia and Florida territories. Throughout his tenure, Gibson played a major role in coaching and developing four First Team All-Conference selections and the 2021 Special Teams Player of the Year for the Pioneer Football League.

UAlbany is coming off the best season in program history. The Great Danes finished with an 11-4 overall record, going 7-1 in CAA action. Under Gattuso and his staff, the team claimed its first ever conference title, sharing it with Villanova and Richmond. The Great Danes defeated Villanova midway through the season, 31-10 at home, and took down Richmond in the Second Round of the FCS Playoffs, 41-13 at home.

UAlbany was awarded the NCAA's #5 seed in the playoffs, the highest the team has ever been ranked, while also receiving a First Round bye. The team's Second Round win over Richmond cemented the furthest the Great Danes had ever reached in the postseason, having previously reached the Second Round in 2019. In the Quarterfinals, UAlbany flew across the country to #4 Idaho – taking down the Vandals, 30-22, in the Kibbie Dome to advance to the Semifinals before falling to South Dakota State, the top seed and eventual National Champions.
