Track & Field Opens Season at Army and Boston University

ALBANY, N.Y. - For the second consecutive year, the UAlbany track and field teams will visit Army's Crowell Open and Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener to open the season.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The UAlbany track and field program was last in competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in June.
  • Ludith Campos (hammer throw) and current sophomore Amelia Benjamin (high jump) each qualified for their respective events.
  • Both Campos and Benjamin finished 15th in the nation to earn All-American status. Campos crushed the previous school record with a 62.72m throw.
 
LAST TIME AT THE CROWELL OPEN
  • UAlbany opened the 2023-24 track and field season at Army's Crowell Open.
  • The Great Danes won 10 events and set two new program records.
    • Travis Robinson broke his own record that he set in 2022 with a 55-3 shot put throw.
    • Efe Omokeni surpassed the meet record from 2020 with an 18-9.25 mark in the long jump.
  • With the top-five finishers, UAlbany swept in the 60m hurdles. Toni Galloway led with a winning time of 8.73. Kate Del Gandio (8.86), Donnell Hartley (8.90), Shanise Staats (9.40), and Melissa Gueye (9.45) all followed. 
 
LAST TIME AT THE SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER
  • Much like the Crowell Open, part of the UAlbany track and field team (the distance runners) opened their season at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in 2023.
  • Jared Rogalski ran a personal best in the men's mile while Hassan Abidi placed third in the men's 1000m in his UAlbany debut.
  • Amanda Chambers moved into third place in program history with her personal-best 16:32.02 in the women's 5000m.
 
CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE
  • The UAlbany cross country/track and field program claimed their first America East Championship victory in 2003 when the men won the indoor championship. Since then, each of the six programs have claimed at least one America East crown.
  • The program's six teams have collectively won 65 of UAlbany's 134 Division I championship titles with their most recent coming during the spring season when the women's team secured their fourth consecutive AE win.
 
AMERICA EAST INDOOR HISTORY
  • The women's indoor track and field team won nine-straight conference titles from 2013-22. Extending to the 2010 championship, the women's team has won 12 in 14 seasons.
  • The men's team has won 17 since their first in 2003, including 12 consecutive wins from 2006 to 2017. 
  • In 2017, the men set a single-meet program record with 10 event victories. The women's team set theirs in 2019, the year of their Triple Crown, with nine event victories.
  • Historically, the women's most successful event has been the high hurdles, with 10 event victories, while the men have found the most success in the triple jump with 13 victories.

The Great Danes will head home for the semester break. They will begin the bulk of the indoor season at Columbia's Dr. Sander Invitational on January 24-25.
