SHORT STORY: The Great Danes battled hard throughout the game with an even share of possession but were unable to get one past the goaltender as the Hawkeyes took the Sunday afternoon win.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "Playing a top team early is beyond valuable for us. I think we are a good team and for a large portion of the game, we hung with them. There were a couple of silly mistakes early; I think there is such value, even in losing the game, because it tells us what areas we need to clean up. I am proud of our team and how we played, particularly in battling back after the [first] two goals and settling the game. I think moving forward we are going to gain a lot of experience from this [game]."

KEY STATS
  • Junior Alison Smisdom led the Great Danes with three shots.
  • UAlbany held a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners.
  • The Hawkeyes outshot the Great Danes, 9-7, with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawkeyes opened the scoring with a deflection from a cross in the second minute of the game. A minute later, Iowa extended their lead to 2-0.
  • Iowa lined up for what seemed like a definite goal after earning a penalty stroke with 3:14 on the second-quarter clock. Graduate student goalie Hannah Mangan lined up and stopped the stroke from putting a goal on the scoreboard.
  • After a scoreless third quarter, the Great Danes emptied the net with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.
  • The Hawkeyes sealed the deal after tallying a penalty stroke goal at 2:23.

NEXT: The Great Danes will host Hofstra (Sept. 8) before heading to Cornell (Sept. 10) for their first road contest of 2023.
