Top 20 Finish Leads Women’s Golf at Princeton Invitational

FINISH: 9th - 917 (+65) - out of 12 teams

LOCATION: Springdale Golf Club - Princeton, N.J.

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes improved with each round on their way to a ninth-place finish at the Princeton Invitational.

COACH COLLEEN CASHMAN:
"Playing Princeton's event is always an exciting tournament for us. We like the golf course and have had some success there in past years. This week we really had some great practices and we felt ready to play.

"Unfortunately, we got off to a slow start in round one, but we were able to improve each round as we went on. Our core of the three seniors did a great job of stepping up to lead the pack with all of their rounds counting towards the team score. It was nice to see Mariel [Tee] return to good form after a record-breaking season last year.

"We were able to see lots of putts drop for birdies. Unfortunately, we just had too many big numbers that held us back from being at the top of the leaderboard. However, being able to beat some very good schools this weekend was a step in the right direction for the start of the season."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting with a +5 for the first round, senior Mariel Tee improved two strokes with each round to lead the Great Danes and finish tied for 17th.
  • Seniors Katelin Richards and Malene Clausen contributed to the team score in all three rounds to finish tied for 34th and 45th, respectively.
  • Clausen earned the second-highest Great Dane score in the first round (77) while Richards tied for the highest in the second round (74) and followed Tee in the third (75).
  • Sophomores Thantita Aungsuseewong and Lucia Esteban shared the fourth team score in each round.
  • Aungsuseewong totaled 78 strokes in the first while Esteban added 79 and 77 in the second and third rounds, respectively.
  • Golfing as an individual, freshman Nicole Criscone finished with a total of 248 strokes.
  • Clausen led the team with six birdies while Tee, Richards, and Criscone followed with five each.
  • As a team, the Great Danes totaled 26 birdies (21 from those competing for the team score).

NEXT: The Great Danes will prepare to head to Boston for the Red Bandanna Intercollegiate, hosted by Boston University, on September 25-26.
