Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team claimed its first win of the young 2023 season this afternoon, 16-3 over Central Connecticut State. The Great Danes used the bullpen to shut down the Blue Devils, using seven different pitchers over nine innings of work. The UAlbany offense did its part with a season-high 16 runs scored.
Head Coach Jon Mueller: "It was a nice team win for the guys today. Mariano was sharp in his first career start and the guys who followed performed well."

- Matthew Mariano threw three innings while only giving up one hit in his first collegiate start.
- Six UAlbany pitchers combined to not give up a single earned run.
- Dan Tauken finished with three hits, including a double, in five at-bats with a walk. He collected three runs and two RBIs.
- Will Feil finished with three RBIs to lead the team, two of which came on bases loaded walks. He finished 1-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
- Will Binder finished with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
- Danny Alvarez went 1-1 with two RBIs.
- Jason Bottari showed discipline at the plate, drawing four walks and scoring twice.
- UAlbany totaled eight hits and an astounding 16 walks, leaving 12 men on base.
How it Happened:
- Matthew Mariano made his first collegiate start for the Great Danes, Sam Alswang started on the mound for CCSU.
- Albany struck first in the second inning. With the bases loaded, CCSU's catcher gave a pop throw down to first, which got away from the first baseman. As a result, Chris Fisher was able to stroll into home plate from third.
- CCSU' Alswang was knocked out of the game in the second after twice loading the bases. The Blue Devils replaced him with Logan Wenzel.
- Wenzel's first batter, Will Feil, drew a walk on four pitches to bring home Victor Mazzara, making it 2-0.
- With the bases still loaded, Will Binder hit a gap single to right to bring home another two runs for UAlbany. Dan Tauken followed in the very next at-bat with an almost identical hit to right, making it 5-0 UAlbany.
- Kurt Thomas took the mound for CCSU to start the third.
- Feil collected his second RBI of the game that inning the same way he collected his first – a bases loaded walk to make it 6-0. It was stretched to 7-0 the next at-bat after a wild pitch scored Devan Kruzinski.
- TJ Wainwright took the ball for the Blue Devils to start the top of the fourth.
- After allowing just one hit, UAlbany's Mariano was replaced by Ty Sanatabarbara to start the bottom of the fourth.
- CCSU collected its first run of the afternoon that inning. Kyle Gordon crossed the plate on a fielder's choice after the ball was put in play by Joe Rios.
- Drew Munn came in to pitch for CCSU in the top of the fifth.
- Ryan Pittz was given the ball for UAlbany in the bottom of the fifth.
- Nick Benhardt was handed the ball to begin the sixth.
- Feil collected his third RBI of the game in the sixth, an RBI single that scored Jason Bottari and made it 8-1.
- Tauken, one of UAlbany's hottest hitters, pushed it to 9-1 shortly after with an RBI double to left center to score Feil.
- Still in the sixth, Dylan Banner collected his first RBI of the afternoon with a SAC fly to tight, scoring Will Binder. The next at-bat, Owen Silliman made it an even 10 with a grounder to third base. CCSU gained an out on the fielder's choice, but the score moved to 11-1.
- Nicholas Jessen was handed the ball to start the bottom of the sixth.
- Randy Reyes came in to pitch for CCSU in the seventh.
- Michael DiMartino took the mound for UAlbany to start the seventh.
- CCSU's Brady short hit a two-run home run in the seventh, making it 11-3.
- UAlbany made it a 13-3 ballgame in the eighth. Danny Alvarez singled through the left side to score Tauken, then Kruzinski reached on another fielder's choice to score Carson Dunkel.
- Rob Manetta entered the game for the Great Danes to begin the eighth.
- Omar Garrido came in to pitch for CCSU in the ninth. He loaded the bases without recording an out before walking in a run. Tyler Pugliese was the batter for the Great Danes able to draw the BB, scoring Binder.
- Garrido was replaced by Jack Kelley, who immediately hit UAlbany's Alvarez to walk in another run, 15-3. Justin Hurd bade it 16-3 with a SAC fly to right, scoring Dunkel.
- Steven Turk was given the ball to close out the game for the Great Danes.
