Regular Season Champions, #19 Field Hockey Defeats Vermont

SCORE: UAlbany 2, Vermont 1

LOCATION: Moulton Winder Field - Burlington, Vt.

RECORDS: UAlbany 12-5, 7-1 AE | Vermont 8-9, 5-3 AE

SHORT STORY: Down by one for three quarters, the Great Danes battled to secure the win with two goals in the fourth quarter, Friday afternoon. With the win, UAlbany has secured at least a portion of the Regular Season Champion title.

COACH PHIL SYKES: "What a tough game today. Vermont played a really great game. I am so proud of how our girls battled in the second half while being down a goal. Winning a regular season title is a very positive achievement!"

KEY STATS
  • With two single-assist goals, the Great Danes had four different point-scorers throughout the contest.
  • Sophomore Sophia Schoonmaker and junior Isabella Del Vecchio each scored a goal.
  • Freshman Mara Küskes and junior Alison Smisdom notched an assist each.
  • The Great Danes outshot the Catamounts, 8-4, with a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont got on the board first with a goal towards the end of the first quarter.
  • The Great Danes tallied the only two shots in a second quarter that saw mostly midfield play.
  • The third quarter showed the most action in the circle with a total of six shots, four for UAlbany and two for Vermont, but the game remained in the Catamounts' favor after 45 minutes of action.
  • Just under four minutes into the final quarter, the Great Danes tied the score with a deflection from Sophia Schoonmaker. After Alison Smisdom sent a pass into the circle, a Catamount defended the ball to cause it to enter the air where Schoonmaker made an in-air deflection for the goal.
  • Scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal, Isabella Del Vecchio extended her stick for a one-touch deflection with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. Similar to Smisdom and Schoonmaker's goal, Mara Küskes sent the ball into the circle from the same location as Smisdom.

NEXT: The Great Danes will compete in the America East Championship Tournament. UAlbany will begin play on Friday, November 3 as either the one- or two-seed. More information will be made available on Sunday.
