Â
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's soccer team and head coach
Trevor Gorman have announced the schedule for the upcoming 2022 season. The Great Danes will play 17 regular-season games starting August 25, including eight games at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium and three against teams that made the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Â
"We're excited to compete this fall against what we know will be a challenging schedule," said Gorman. Â "We always aim to play against tough teams and programs with traditions of success. Â This schedule will certainly test us every week as we look to be an NCAA tournament team in November."
Â
The season begins August 25 at home against Boston University, before a three-game road swing at Lafayette on August 29, at Fairfield on September 2, and at 2021 MAAC champion Marist on September 5. A showdown with Penn at home on September 9 breaks up a stretch of four of five games on the road, before the team visits B1G opponent Rutgers on September 13. It will be the first game in history between the Great Danes and the Scarlet Knights.
Â
Another Ivy League opponent, Dartmouth, visits Casey Stadium on September 17, immediately preceding the opening of America East play at UMBC on September 24. The Great Danes return home on October 1 to host America East newcomer Bryant, before visiting Binghamton on October 8.
Â
The America East, once again, was one of the top conferences in the country in 2021, opening the season with a combined record of 27-14-5, and expects to be so in 2022. UAlbany finished third overall following the regular season, behind only nationally-ranked New Hampshire and Vermont.Â
Â
The conference sent two teams, New Hampshire and Vermont, to the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats peaked at #4 in the national coaches' poll in 2021, and ran through the America East 7-0-1 before falling to Vermont in the 2021 conference championship game. New Hampshire earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, and advanced to the Sweet-16 where they fell 1-0 to top overall seed Oregon State.
Â
The Great Danes ultimately play seven of their first 11 games on the road, before closing with four of their final six at home, starting with three-straight at Casey Stadium starting October 11 against Army West Point, October 14 against New Hampshire, and October 18 against Colgate, the final non-conference matchup of the regular season.
Â
Two final regular-season games at 2021 America East quarterfinal opponent NJIT on October 22, followed by a trip to UMass Lowell on October 28, precede the regular-season finale against 2021 America East champion Vermont at home on November 1.
Â
The 2022 America East Tournament begins November 5 with the quarterfinal round. Semifinals are scheduled for November 10, followed by the title game on November 13.
Â
UAlbany went 10-7-1 in 2021, the program's fifth winning season in the last six played in the fall.
