SHORT STORY: After 55 scoreless minutes and an even playing field, the Nittany Lions put one past the UAlbany defense before taking the one-goal win, Sunday afternoon.
COACH PHIL SYKES: "It was a tough loss today. I could not be more proud of our team and how they performed over the weekend. To play as well as we did today against a talented Penn State team and to give ourselves a chance to win was all we could ask for. This has been one of the most enjoyable seasons and it's been a special group to coach and be a part of."
KEY STATS
- Sophomore Alison Smisdom led with four shots, including three on goal.
- Freshman Sophia Schoonmaker followed with two shots, one on goal.
- Senior Julie Rodijk added the final UAlbany shot.
- The Nittany Lions held the slight advantage in shots, 10-7, and penalty corners, 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Great Danes gathered the ball for the first play past the 25-yard line. Unable to get far into the circle, the Nittany Lions grabbed the ball and brought it up the field.
- Action continued back and forth with Penn State making the only two shots in the first quarter.
- In the second quarter, both teams were able to make a couple of plays in the circle.
- After two corners and two shots from the Nittany Lions, Julie Rodijk tallied the contest's first shot on goal six minutes into the quarter.
- Heading into halftime both teams remained scoreless. UAlbany worked for the 2-0 advantage in shots on goal while Penn State had totaled four shots.
- Similar to the first quarter, the third saw just two shots, a shot on goal from Sophia Schoonmaker and a blocked shot from PSU.
- Penn State started out the final quarter with their first shot on goal.
- The Great Danes took the ball down to their offensive half for a penalty corner and a shot on goal from Alison Smisdom in the sixth minute of the quarter.
- Continuing the back-and-forth play, the Nittany Lions grabbed the ball and made two shots before scoring with 5:07 on the fourth-quarter clock.
- Pulling the goalie, UAlbany played man-up for the final five minutes of play but despite adding three shots, the Great Danes were unable to tie the score and Penn State won the game, 1-0.
