Key Stat Lines
Coach Greg Gattuso: "It feels great. We talked a lot this week about what it takes to win close games. I thought they had a lot of grit, and they played really tough today. It was physical, we made plays in big moments. The offense starts the game by going down for a score, and Anthony Lang makes a big play on the outside… Overall I thought we played a great game all the way around against a rival.

How it Happened:
  • On the first drive of the game, UAlbany marched 85 yards on 10 plays and took a 7-0 lead when Reese Poffenbarger found Julian Hicks over the top for a 25-yard touchdown. Wideout Jackson Parker made four catches for 46 yards during the drive.
  • The Great Danes increased their lead shortly after when Anthony Lang intercepted Stony Brook's Charlie McKee at the 49-yard line and took it to the house. The interception was the first of Lang's career, putting UAlbany up 14-0.
  • With under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, Jose Lopez-Quinones scored the first touchdown of his career on a one yard rush up the middle. Traveling 48 yards on nine plays, UAlbany found themselves with a 21-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • On the first play of the second Quarter, Stony Brook's McKee threw his second interception of the day. Semaj Brown was in position to receive the overthrown pass and carried the ball 25 yards to Stony Brook's 35-yard line.
  • Following the turnover, the Great Danes pushed for 35 yards on four plays and gave themselves a 28-0 lead when Jackson Parker shook off two defenders to cross the goal line for a 25-yard touchdown, his first of 2022.
  • Stony Brook's defense held off UAlbany on third down to force a field goal attempt midway through the second quarter. John Opalko converted the 36-yard field goal, giving the Great Danes a 31-0 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
  • With 16 seconds left before halftime, Poffenbarger directed traffic and found Hicks for a 5-yard TD score to put UAlbany up 38-0. The TD was Hicks' second of the day, with the drive lasting 12 plays and covering 89 yards.
  • On the first play of the second half, Stony Brook's McKee threw his third interception of the day. Anton Juncaj batted the pass and AJ Mistler picked it off and took it to Stony Brook's 22-yard line.
  • Three plays and 22-yards later, UAlbany scored its first touchdown of the second half. Poffenbarger connected with Hicks down the middle for a 15-yard score, giving Hicks his third touchdown of the day and UAlbany a 45-0 lead.
  • The Great Dane defense came up big again on fourth down with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, forcing a turnover on downs with Stony Brook on the UAlbany 20-yard line.
  • Following the turnover on downs, Poffenbarger aired one out for Quinn Zinobile, connecting for 56 yards on the first play of the drive. Todd Sibley completed the 69-yard drive rushing for a 15-yard score shortly after, giving UAlbany a 52-0 advantage.
  • On the first play of the ensuing Stony Brook drive, Isaac Duffy joined the turnover club with an interception on Mckee, his fourth of the day, giving UAlbany possession on the Stony Brook 34-yard line.
  • Tyler Szalkowski was subbed in for Poffenbarger to begin the UAlbany drive following the Duffy INT and threw his first career touchdown shortly after. He found Kristen McAdams in the end zone for a 19-yard completion, improving the Great Danes' lead to 59-0.
  • Stony Brook spoiled the shutout when backup quarterback Daron Bryden found Delante Hellams Jr. in the middle of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 59-7 with 9:58 remaining in the final quarter.
  • Scoring a second touchdown for Stony Brook was Makhia Jinks, rushing for one yard across the goal line to make the score 59-14 with one minute and 32 seconds on the clock.
  • UAlbany ran down the remaining time on the clock following the touchdown and secured the 59-14 win over Stony Brook to win the Golden Apple trophy.
