How it Happened:
- The Great Danes' defense came up big with just over eight minutes remaining in the first quarter as Larry Walker Jr. swatted a pass that deflected and fell into the hands of AJ Simon, who took it to the house. The play was called back to the 45-yard line for an illegal block in the back, but the pick still counted.
- Following the turnover, UAlbany put the first seven on the board when Reese Poffenbarger, from the 35-yard line, found Thomas Greaney at the 12, who ran it in for six. The drive lasted only three plays for 47 yards.
- Hampton made the game level when Darren Butts rushed for 52-yards and the score with 2:16 remaining in the first quarter.
- UAlbany took a 10-7 lead on the first drive of the second quarter when John Opalko converted a 27-yard field goal. The drive lasted 14 plays for 65 yards and left 9:26 on the clock.
- On the next drive, Hampton marched 74 yards on 10 plays, but the Great Dane defense forced a field goal with the Pirates on the one-yard line. The ensuing field goal tied the game, 10-10.
- UAlbany reclaimed the lead before halftime when Poffenbarger threw over the middle for 36 yards to Roy Alexander in the end zone. The drive lasted under one minute as the Great Danes covered 65 yards on five plays, giving them a 17-10 advantage.
- The UAlbany defense forced a three-and-out with under a minute remaining in the half to get the ball back with just 19 seconds remaining. On the final play of the first half, Poffenbarger let it fly for 40 yards to Greaney on the edge of the end zone. The tight end managed to stay in bounds to give the Great Danes a 24-10 lead. UAlbany traveled 65 yards in 19 seconds on just three plays.
- Jackson Ambush got the UAlbany defense off to a strong start in the second half, picking off Malcom Mays on Hampton's first drive after his pass was deflected into the air. The play gave the UAlbany offense the ball at their own 48-yard line.
- Hampton got on the board first in the second half, marching 68 yards on six plays. Mays threw over the top to Jadakis Bonds in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard completion, cutting the UAlbany lead to 24-17.
- The Great Danes responded on the next drive, covering 63 yards in eight plays. The drive was capped when Todd Sibley rushed for a five-yard score to give the Great Danes a 14-point lead in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
- Shortly after Sibley's touchdown, the Pirates scored themselves as May connected with Tyler Thompson for a 43-yard touchdown down the middle, cutting the lead back down to seven with 13:47 remaining.
- After 11 plays and 85 yards, Kymari Gray tied the game for Hampton with 5:09 remaining in the game. Mays found Gray for a five-yard completion in the end zone.
- The Pirates had a chance to take the lead with seven seconds on the clock, but missed a 35-yard field goal attempt, sending the game to overtime.
- On Hampton's first overtime possession, Mays found Bonds for a seven-yard completion on third down, giving the Pirates a 38-31 advantage ahead of UAlbany's first OT possession.
- UAlbany brought the game within one when Quinn Zinobile made an acrobatic catch in the end zone on 4th and goal from the 15. However, the Great Danes were not able to complete the two-point conversion on a screen pass to Todd Sibley on the far side, where he was held short of the goal line.
