BOSTON – For the second time in three seasons, and the second time overall, the University at Albany women's soccer team claims the America East Striker of the Year Award.Â
Jasmine Colbert wins the honor for the 2021 spring season, following in the footsteps of former teammate Mariah Williams, who won the same award in 2018.
Â
Colbert leads a collection of eight total America East All-Conference awards, distributed among five players. Colbert, who has previously been named to the America East Second Team in 2019, and to the America East All-Tournament and All-Rookie Teams in 2018, scored five goals during the Great Danes' 2021 spring season, scoring the game-winner in each of UAlbany's five victories.
Â
Joining Colbert on the All-Conference First Team was defender
Hailey Summers. Once again, Summers anchored UAlbany's defensive line, leading the Great Danes' defense to four shutouts in 10 contests, and allowing just five goals against America East opponents. Summers, one of two 2021 team captains, was also UAlbany's lone representative on the All-Academic Team, pulling down a 3.96 GPA to earn her undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in English in the fall. Summers is currently in her first semester pursuing her Master's degree in Criminal Justice.
Â
Jasmine's twin sister Jada was named to the All-Conference Second Team for the second time in her career and first since her freshman season in 2018, where she was also named Rookie of the Year. Jada ranked second on the team behind Jasmine with six total points, scoring two goals and recording two assists.
Â
Freshman
Olivia Piraino was also named All-Conference Second Team. Piraino, who was further named to the All-Rookie Team, tied Jada for second on the team with two goals in her inaugural season with the Great Danes. Piraino was one of seven players to start all 10 games for UAlbany this spring, four of whom were freshmen.
Â
UAlbany's final award-winner was Marjot Nezaj, who joined Piraino on the All-Rookie Team. Like Piraino, Nezaj also started all 10 games for UAlbany, playing with Summers on UAlbany's stout defensive line. Nezaj ranked second on the team, behind Summers, in total minutes played this season.
Â
UAlbany's 2021 spring season has come to an end. The America East Tournament begins this week at top overall seed UMass Lowell.
