INDIANAPOLIS – On Wednesday, October 14, the NCAA announced that the University at Albany had been awarded hosting rights of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal Round which will be played in Tom and Mary Casey Stadium in 2023.
"We couldn't be more thrilled in receiving this news from the NCAA," said Director of Athletics
Mark Benson. "We feel like UAlbany and the greater Capital Region have the best lacrosse fans in the nation, so it only seems fitting that the NCAA Quarterfinals should come through Casey Stadium."
In 2017, the eighth-seeded Great Danes defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 15-12 in front of an NCAA First Round record crowd of 6,472 fans. Following the record crowd in 2017, UAlbany fans showed out again in 2018 when another stellar crowd of over 4,800 fans came to watch the Great Danes defeat the Richmond Spiders en route to their first-ever run to Championship Weekend. In all, the UAlbany men's lacrosse program has hosted three NCAA Tournament games and has reached the quarterfinal round five times in program history.
"This is a truly amazing day for UAlbany, our program and lacrosse fans across the Capital Region," said Men's Lacrosse Head Coach
Scott Marr. "There's no doubt that Albany has become a national fixture within the lacrosse community. This area loves lacrosse, and we're really excited for this opportunity."
In 2019, UAlbany hosted a weekend in the inaugural season of the Premier Lacrosse League, which featured eight former UAlbany players. After a successful weekend of sold-out crowds, UAlbany was once again awarded hosting rights for a weekend in the 2020 season, ultimately being postponed due to the league's scheduling changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
