ALBANY, N.Y. -- For the second straight game, the University at Albany field hockey team held its opponent scoreless, shutting out Bryant University 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf. With the win, the Great Danes improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2.
Senior Paula Heuser and redshirt junior Molly Mariano led the squad with two goals apiece, while sophomore Camryn Dias had one. Eight players directly had a hand in scoring, as junior Kelsey Briddell, senior Jaclyn Hibbs, junior Anna Bottino, sophomore Megan Ma, and freshman Alyssa Curtis were credited assists.
“The opposition was very excited and aggressive today,” said Head Coach Phil Sykes. “But once we calmed down and started to make better choices, I think we were able to take over the game in the second half.”
While the Great Danes held a 25-6 shot advantage in the contest, Bryant held UAlbany to one goal in the first half when Bottino fired towards the cage and Dias got a touch on the ball in the 14th minute.
However, in the second half, UAlbany took command, outshooting the Bulldogs 17-1. In the first 10 minutes following halftime, the Danes added three goals to their tally, sparked by Mariano's first goal of the season on a pass from Heuser.
Heuser then accounted for UAlbany's next two goals, finding the back of the cage on Briddell's backwards flip from her knees in the 42nd minute. Just two minutes later, Heuser scored again, directly on a penalty corner inserted by Ma and set up by Hibbs for a 4-0 advantage.
Mariano netted her second goal of the contest in the 68th minute of play, as Curtis shuffled a short pass to her in front of the cage.
“The unselfishness of our team stood out in a good way today,” said Sykes. “Sharing the ball, talking positively, and keeping it moving -- that was the reason we had a lot of good openings to get shots and score goals.”
Sharing time in goal, senior Maxi Primus earned two saves in 48:18 minutes of play, while redshirt freshman Melissa Nealon had one, preserving the team shutout.
Up next, the Great Danes host Dartmouth Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Turf.
