SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Playing its first game in New York in the season, the UAlbany women's soccer team fell to Colgate 2-0 in the NY Challenge Cup in Syracuse on Friday night.
“The result is disappointing, and the fact that we were not able to score a goal despite several great chances is as well,” said UAlbany acting head coach Nick Bochette. “However, we really wanted to challenge ourselves early in the year, and we can take plenty of positives away from this game against a formidable opponent in Colgate.”
Kiana Rugar put two shots on goal for UAlbany (1-2), while Vivian Vega and Caitlyn Paltsios each had three shots in the game. Alana Brennan got the loss for UAlbany in goal, finishing with six saves.
For Colgate (1-2), Catherine Williams scored a goal in the 37th minute, while Emily Crichlow netted a ball in the 49th minute. Erin Cummings picked up the shutout win in goal with four saves.
The first chance in the game came from Vega, who fired towards the goal in the 11th minute but missed wide. Her shot was the only shot in the game's opening 20 minutes.
In minute 32, Colgate got a long possession, with Williams kicking and missing high. Corey Persson retrieved the goal kick and shot towards the net, with Brennan making the save.
Less than five minutes later, Williams scored off a far side cross towards the right post for a 1-0 Colgate lead, the eventual halftime score.
The second half saw many more shots by both teams. The first chance came in the 49th minute as Crichlow received the cross from Persson and scored for a 2-0 Colgate lead.
UAlbany held off a couple of high shots from Colgate and got an opportunity in the 70th minute. Paltsios put a corner kick into the box, finding Shelby Belak. Belak's shot was blocked, and a Colgate counterattack, leading to a Sarah Coy shot being saved by Brennan, ended the threat.
In the last 15 minutes, UAlbany picked up the pace and put three shots on goal and another couple of chances wide of the net. The Great Danes could not close the gap and fell 2-0 to Colgate.
UAlbany returns to the SU Soccer Stadium for a 3 p.m. Sunday game against host Syracuse.
