Four Personal Bests On Day One At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – The University at Albany outdoor track program kicked off proceedings at the Penn Relays on Thursday. Four athletes competing in the first day set new personal bests, and one set a new school record in the process.
Silvia Del Fava placed fourth overall in the college women's 10,000 championship, finishing in 34:13.82. The mark not only improves her own personal best by nearly two minutes, but also broke the old school record of 34:26.47 set by Brittney Lane in 2013.
Three other athletes set personal bests in their events. Lauren Lopano improved her best mark yet again in the hammer, throwing 157'-10” in the college women's section to place 20th. Her previous best came this year at the Upstate Classic, where she threw 156'-7”. Janice Johnson placed seventh in the eastern division of the women's college shot put, throwing 44'-3.5”. Her previous best was 43'-6”, which she threw at this year's America East Indoor Championships. Her previous best throw outdoors was 43'-2.5”, from earlier this season. Finally, James Sommer placed fourth in the Olympic development men's 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in 9:16.61. His previous best was 9:22.52, which he ran last year at the America East Outdoor Championships.
Tynelle Taylor-Chase placed 21st in the college women's 400 hurdles championship section, running 1:01.22. Min Pacella and Ashley Grant placed 11th and 17th respectively in the eastern division of the women's high jump. Both athletes jumped 5'-4.5”. Samantha Kosa placed 13th in the eastern division of the women's shot put with a mark of 41'-9.75”. In the one relay the Danes ran on Thursday, the women's 4x400 team of Kamilah Williams, Aderinsola Ajala, Dominique Claudio, and Taylor-Chase placed 49th with a time of 3:53.53.
Friday's scheduled for UAlbany includes all three men's sprint relays, as well as the men's distance medley relay, the men's 400 hurdles, and the men's eastern division high jump. The women will also be running their shuttle hurdle relay.
