ALBANY, N.Y. – Off to
a strong start in 2013, the University at Albany men's indoor track and field
team is ranked sixth in the Week 2 Northeast Region Index by the U.S. Track
& Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) with a total of
157.19 points. The Great Danes have been highly regarded this season, ranking
third in the first week's release (194.16 points).
UAlbany's male athletes own the top America East marks in
four events this winter, including the top four times in the 400m dash. Senior Jonathan
Santana's 48.00
second time leads the pack, followed by Alex Petit-Frere (48.57)
Taariq Jones (49.47)
and Charles Karam (49.55).
Sophomore Chris Buchanan ranks first in the conference with
his 4:08.89
mark in the mile, while field athletes Alexander Bowen and Alfonso Scannapieco
both have nationally ranked leaps in the high jump and pole vault,
respectively. Bowen's 7'
1" mark in the high jump is not only the best in the league, but the
top height in UAlbany program history and the 18th-best in the NCAA Division I
level this season. Scannapieco's 16'
10.75" pole vault mark at the Great Dane Classic (1/18) is also an
AEast top height and the winter's 38th-best score in the nation.
National team rankings are compiled by mathematical formulae
based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons.
For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data is taken from
previous seasons as well as the current season. The purpose and methodology of
the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best
potential of achieving the top spots in the national-team race.
The Great Danes are back in action this Friday and Saturday
at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the NYC Armory. It will represent
the squad's final test before the America East Championship, set for Feb. 11-12
in Boston, Mass.
