West Point, N.Y. - University at Albany's Kelsey Hanson combined for 3,262 points to place first in the pentathlon at Army's Carlton Crowell Open on January 8th. The event marks the season opener for the Great Danes.
Hanson won the long jump at a mark of 16 feet and 11.5 inches and 60-meter hurdles in 9.32 seconds. Emily Curry took third place in the five-event pentathlon with 2,853 points. Curry took the 800 meter run with a 2:38.80 time.
UAlbany's Alfonso Scannapieco placed first in the heptathlon with 4,956 points, while the Great Danes rounded out the top-three with Jared Heldman (4,783 points) and Matthew Catera (4,771 points). Scannapieco had first place marks for the long (21-07.25) and high jump (06.25) events as well as in the pole vault (15-03.00). Catera finished first in the 60-meter hurdles portion of the seven-event with a 8.65 second sprint. Heldman had a second place finish shot put throw of 40 feet and 2.25 inches.
Freshman hurdler Michelle Anthony took fourth place in her first collegiate event with a 9.33 second 60-meter hurdle time. On the men's side, Elijah Pardo clocked a 8.40 60-meter hurdle to place fifth.
The Great Danes season continues next weekend at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge at University Park, Pa.
