Cambridge, Mass. - University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy on Thursday, June 30 the school has placed 129 student-athletes on the America East Conference Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for the 2010-11 academic year. Students had to earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher to receive this recognition, with those earning a 3.5 GPA or better appeared on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. America East honored more than 1,282 student-athletes from around the conference. UAlbany produced 47 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
UAlbany's women's track and field squad had 32 student-athletes on the conference academic honor roll, the highest number selected among Great Dane teams. Women's track also had a department-high 13 members on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll. Men's track and field, which like the women's program captured both the conference indoor and outdoor championships for the second straight year, had 30 student-athletes chosen.
Nikki Branchini, a member of the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America national second team, led a group of 12 women's lacrosse athletes on the academic honor roll. Branchini was awarded IWLCA Division I Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received an ECAC Merit Medal as the school's top senior female student-athlete.
Kyle Crotty, who made his second consecutive appearance on the America East men's lacrosse all-academic squad, was among 14 team members to make the conference academic honor roll. Crotty received UAlbany's Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award as the senior male with the highest cumulative grade point average. Gina Mason, a first-team all-conference performer, was one off 13 softball selections, a team that was one of four UAlbany programs to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2010-11.
UAlbany's men's basketball program placed four athletes on the winter academic honor roll, including America East third team all-league selection and Capital One District I Academic All-America Logan Aronhalt. The women's basketball team had seven chosen. Julie Forester, a third-team All-America East forward and Capital One District I Academic All-American, highlights the group.
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference's 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors.
