No. 1 Syracuse Looks Powerful in 18-13 Win Over UAlbany in Battle of National Top-20 Teams

Syracuse, N.Y. - Tim Desko and Tommy Palasek each had four goals and one assist in leading Syracuse, the nation's top-ranked team, to a 18-13 victory over UAlbany on Tuesday, March 15 at the Carrier Dome. The unbeaten Orange are No. 1 in both the USILA and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Polls.
     Syracuse (5-0) led 6-3 in the second quarter, but then broke the game open with three unanswered over a span of less than two minutes. Defenseman Thomas Guadagnolo converted a shot into the right side after Collin Donahue took Jeremy Thompson's behind-the-back pass and found the long-pole defender at the top of the zone. Tim Harder, a defensive midfielder, scored off Joel White's feed following a UAlbany turnover in the offensive end. JoJo Marasco sent a blast into the top right corner with 31 seconds left before the intermission.
     The Orange built a 4-1 advantage after the opening quarter when Desko found the cage with an underhanded shot from in front of the crease and While scored in transition after goalkeeper John Galloway's save. The Great Danes stayed three down in the second stanza as Ty Thompson connected from left of the crease and Joe Resetarits rolled around an SU defender for an unassisted tally.
     UAlbany (3-2) appeared to start an uprising early in the third quarter when Matt Johnson scored back-to-back goals, including finishing off a drive from the right side that closed the gap to 10-5. Johnson had possession again in the SU zone, but White caused a turnover with a big hit. The Orange regained control from that point forward by scoring three straight times. Josh Amidon sent a sidearm blast into the net, before Stephen Keogh made a bounce shot from in close. Desko hit the lower left corner from the right in a man-advantage situation for an eight-goal margin.
     The Great Danes, who are ranked No. 14 in the current polls after defeating a pair of top-20 teams last week, put together a six-goal final period to make things interesting. Thompson netted his third goal of the game and Jack Reynolds scored once and assisted on another in the quarter. SU's Palasek, a Johns Hopkins transfer, scored twice in the final 15 minutes to hold off any comeback.
     "Syracuse in another level up than every team in the country," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose squad played without its entire starting midfield due to injuries. "They have a senior class with two national championship rings and they are playing with confidence. We will not play another team on our schedule that is as good."
     Syracuse's Jeremy Thompson added two goals and two assists. The Orange, who are a unanimous choice to win the Big East Conference championship, are off to their best start since 2000. Matt Mackenzie and Resetarits each scored twice for the Great Danes, who were facing the nation's No. 1 team for the eighth time in the program's history.
     "We brought a real young team to the Carrier Dome tonight," explained Johnson, UAlbany's senior midfielder. "We weren't happy with how we played in the first half and we know we have to play hard from the first whistle."
