Las Vegas, Nev. - Freshman forward Hannah Kimsey scored her first career goal and senior goalkeeper Rachel Jarvis made six saves to lead Portland State to a 3-0 victory over UAlbany on Sunday, Aug. 29 at the Las Vegas Invitational from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
Portland State (2-2), last season's Big Sky Conference regular-season champion, broke through with the match's first goal in the seventh minute when Kimsey dribbled into the box and beat UAlbany goalkeeper Breanna Maggio with a shot to the left post. The Great Danes were awarded three corner kicks and made several bids to tie the match in the last 15 minutes of the half, but the squad could not net the equalizer. The teams went into the break with the Vikings clinging to a one-goal lead.
UAlbany's momentum carried over into the second frame. After Kimsey sailed the ball wide of the goal in the 58th minute, the Great Danes' back line consisting of Casey Marks, Kendra Harrell-Vigil, Katie Norwood and Amy Harrison did not allow the Vikings to attempt a shot for a span that lasted over 25 minutes. As a result, the Great Dane offense took over and was able to unleash five shots at the Viking goalkeeper in an effort to at least tie the match and force an extra session.
Portland State, however, survived the scare and added two insurance tallies in the last six minutes to pull away. Melissa Trammell chipped a shot over Maggio to double the lead, and Frankie Ross sailed a shot from long range that landed in the goal with the Great Dane goalkeeper out of the box before the final whistle sounded.
Maggio made fives saves on 14 chances in net for UAlbany and suffered the loss. Portland State's Jarvis turned away six of the 10 shots she saw to earn the shutout victory.
UAlbany (0-2) will begin a four-game homestand on Wednesday, Sept. 1 when Iona visits Varsity Field. The Great Danes earned a 2-0 victory over the Gaels when the teams met last season in the Capital Region.
