Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced today the school had 188 student-athletes named to the 2009-10 America East Conference Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. Students had to earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher to receive this recognition, with those earning a 3.5 GPA or better appeared on the Commissioner's Honor Roll. America East honored more than 1,700 student-athletes from around the conference. UAlbany placed 81 student-athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
UAlbany's women's outdoor track and field squad had 32 student-athletes on the conference academic honor roll, the highest number selected among Great Dane teams. Women's outdoor track also had a department-high 15 members on the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll. Women's indoor track (28), men's outdoor track (27), men's indoor track (23) and men's lacrosse (20) each had twenty or more athletes chosen.
Olivia Jarem, a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America national second team, led a group of 18 women's lacrosse athletes on the academic honor roll. Jarem received UAlbany's Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award and a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship during the year.
Valete Graham, a national third team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, was among 28 indoor track team members to make the conference academic honor roll, the highest number by a UAlbany men's program. Graham received an ECAC Merit Medal as the school's top senior male student-athlete.
UAlbany's men's basketball program placed six athletes, including America East all-rookie team member Mike Black, on the winter academic honor roll. The women's basketball team had four chosen, including all-conference performer Charity Iromuanya.
Binghamton University had the most student-athletes honored by America East with 272, while New Hampshire (247) and Vermont (211) followed. UAlbany (188) had the fourth-highest total.
