Ohio State Extends Lead in Third Quarter En Route to Men's Lacrosse Win Against UAlbany

Columbus, Ohio - Freshman attackman Jeff Tundo scored three goals, including one in the decisive third quarter, in leading Ohio State to an 11-6 victory over UAlbany on Saturday, March 13 at rain-soaked Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
     Ohio State (4-2) broke open a tight game by scoring twice in the opening five-plus minutes of the third period. Logan Schuss moved in from the right side and past two defenders to tally his 10th of the season. Mike Pires, a junior midfielder, then worked around from the back and fired a low shot from the left into the net.
     Still leading 6-3, the Buckeyes pulled away with three unanswered. Tundo came wide open after Pires found him with a left-to-right crossing pass with 5:41 left in the stanza. Defenseman Keenan Ochwat scored 28 seconds later on a low blast with a long stick following a failed clearing pass. Mike Smail ended the run when he scored from the left side after moving around the cage in a one-on-one matchup with a UAlbany defender.
     Eddie Bambino and James Green added fourth-quarter goals for the Buckeyes, who improved to 4-0 at home this season. Goalkeeper Brandon Freeman stopped 12 shots. Ohio State, who is playing as a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time after winning six Great Western Lacrosse League championships, was coming off last Tuesday's road loss at Robert Morris.
     In a defensive struggle, Ohio State broke a 1-1 tie with 9:22 remaining in the first period when Tundo connected on a wraparound, scoring between the goalkeeper's legs from right of the crease. Tundo gave his team a two-goal advantage with 18 seconds elapsed in the second stanza. Ochwat picked up a ground ball following a faceoff and then hit a cutting Tundo from behind the cage.
     The Buckeyes moved out to a 4-1 advantage when Zach Boyt hit the crossbar with a shot and Dan Wertz netted the rebound. UAlbany (0-5) cut into the deficit with just two seconds left before the break. A long clearing pass by a midfielder was gathered in by Kyle Brunk in his offensive zone and the senior attacker found the cage.
     Sophomore Joe Resetarits scored three times, including a pair of extra-man goals in the final quarter, for the Great Danes, who have lost six consecutive away contests. Goalkeeper John Carroll made 10 saves and Brian Caufield added a season-high three assists.
