Women's Soccer Plays Binghamton to Scoreless Double-Overtime Tie in A-East Match

Vestal, N.Y. - Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Maggio made six saves as UAlbany and Binghamton played to a 0-0 scoreless double-overtime draw in America East Conference women's soccer action on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Great Danes ended the day in a tie for fifth place in the league standings at the midway point of their conference schedule.
UAlbany, which has outshot its last eight opponents, once again came out as the aggressor and took aim at Binghamton goalkeeper Carrie Martin seven times over the first 45 minutes. However, Martin and her defense were solid in the backfield to keep the match scoreless.
The Great Danes also had several chances to score in a more evenly played second half, which included earning two corner kicks in the last 10 minutes, but the visitors could not find the back of the net before the end of regulation. Shayla Bergeron, who scored twice in the team's recent comeback win over New Hampshire, took a hard shot that was saved by Martin with 48 seconds left on the clock.
Binghamton (3-9-1, AE 1-2-1) dominated the first overtime session by outshooting the Great Danes, 4-0, but Maggio came away with two key saves to force another period. After Rebecca Lee and Despina Psomopoulos were unsuccessful with their shot attempts and Maggio made another stop in the second extra session, the teams were forced to settle for the scoreless draw.
Maggio, who holds Division I program records for victories and shutouts, made six saves on 12 chances in goal for UAlbany to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season and seventh of her career. Half of her saves came in the two overtimes. Binghamton's Martin turned away seven of the 14 shots she faced. The Great Danes outshot the Bearcats, 14-12, and had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
UAlbany (6-6-2, AE 1-1-2), which has an unblemished record of 3-0-3 in conference road matches since the beginning of the 2009 season, returns to action when it visits Maine on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m.
