Princeton, N.J. ? Senior Laura Cummings placed 24th and freshman R.J. Sniffen of Shaker High School finished 30th to lead the way for the University at Albany men's and women's cross country teams at the Old Nassau Run hosted by Princeton University on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Great Danes placed sixth in the men's competition and 10th in the women's race. Columbia won the men's title with 48 points while Georgetown, one of three teams in the field that competed at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championship, won the women's race with 28 points.
After the freshman class took eight of the top nine positions on the team at last week's Monmouth Kick-Off Classic, the group claimed seven of the top eight spots for the Great Danes in the men's competition this afternoon. Sniffen navigated the vigorous 8,000-meter course in 26:50 to lead the way for UAlbany.
Sophomore David Rothman was second on the team and 32nd overall with a time of 26:57. Rounding out the top five spots for the Great Danes were freshman Chris Manico of Shaker High School (35th, 27:07), freshman Jack Kelley (40th, 27:20) and freshman Jimmy Carroll (51st, 27:40).
The women's team had an opportunity to finish about 50 points higher, but freshman Emily Fung, who finished second on the team at last week's meet, dropped out of the race midway through the 6,000-meter course and did not score for the Great Danes. Cummings navigated the course in 23:12 to lead the women's team. She has finished first on the squad in every race since transferring to UAlbany from the University of North Carolina last fall.
Freshman Ada Lauterbach of East Berne, N.Y. was second on the team and finished 57th overall with a time of 24:39. Rounding out the top five positions for the women were sophomore Ally Panos (61st, 24:46), junior Laine Sefick (76th, 25:15) and sophomore newcomer Roxanne Wegman (95th, 25:59), who just transferred to UAlbany from the United States Military Academy.
The Great Danes will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to compete at the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University.
