Top-Ranked & Defending National Champion Johns Hopkins Spoils Lacrosse's Season Debut

Baltimore, Md. ? Senior attackman Kevin Huntley had four goals, including three in the second half, in leading top-ranked and defending national champion Johns Hopkins to a 10-5 victory over UAlbany in the season opener for both teams on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Homewood Field.

The Blue Jays, who captured the program's ninth national championship last year, turned a two-goal halftime advantage into a 6-2 lead in the third quarter.  Michael Doneger netted his second goal of the game when he spun to his left shoulder after taking a diagonal pass from Huntley.  Paul Rabil, a first-team All-America midfielder, then rifled a shot from the right point high into the net with 7:47 remaining in the period.

UAlbany (0-1) still trailed by four heading into the fourth quarter, but then mounted a comeback attempt.  Steve Ammann converted a bounce shot from the right side with a penalty flag down on the field.  His twin brother, Mike, then scored 38 seconds later to draw his team within 7-5 with 12:10 to play.  Ammann drove around a midfielder from the right side to find the cage.

Johns Hopkins (1-0) ended the threat with three unanswered over the next seven minutes.  Huntley scored twice in the stretch.  He came uncovered from right of the net and deposited Mark Bryan's feed.  Stephen Peyser connected on a hard angle to far post, before Huntley took a pass from behind and finished off a blast from the left side.

Jordan Levine scored a pair of goals for the Great Danes, who were bottled up most of the day by a stifling Johns Hopkins' defense.  The Blue Jays' Stephen Boyle had two goals and one assist.  Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Gvozden stopped 11 shots in his first career start.

“It was a tough day offensively, but they played well on defense,” said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team was ranked 11th in the USILA preseason national poll after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals last year. “They got to all the 50-50 balls and that was the game in our eyes.  I was happy with our effort and passion, but we just didn't execute on offense and did not have as much movement as we would like.”
