Two UAlbany Women’s Lacrosse Players Earn America East Weekly Honors

BOSTONAfter leading the Great Danes’ offense to its first victories of the season, Sarah Martin and Sam Tortora have each been recognized with America East weekly honors by the league.

Martin has been named the America East Offensive Co-Player of the Week while Tortora has been selected as the league’s rookie of the week.

Martin is receiving her second-ever America East weekly honor and first since picking up a rookie of the week award in 2014.  Tortora has earned her first America East weekly award of her career.  It is the first rookie honor for UAlbany since 2015.

Each helped UAlbany win two games this week, including a dominant 19-3 win over St. Bonaventure and a 13-11 comeback victory over Yale.

Martin started the week with five points, off two goals and three assists, five ground balls and nine draw controls against St. Bonaventure.  The senior midfielder followed with a program record 10 goals and 11 points in the win over Yale.  She had 10 of the team’s 13 goals against Yale, including five goals and an assist in the game-ending 8-0 run.

Tortora began the week with a career-high five points off three goals and two assists against St. Bonaventure, scoring on 3-of-4 shots to the cage.  The freshman midfielder followed with the goal that began the key 8-0 run to win against Yale.

Martin, Tortora and the Great Danes will next play on Monday, February 27th at 5 p.m. at Syracuse.
