Fairfield, Conn. - Laine Mackey recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Darcy Demers at No. 2 singles to help lead UAlbany to a 4-3 win over Sacred Heart in non-conference tennis action on Saturday afternoon.
Sacred Heart earned the doubles point by sweeping all three matches against the Great Danes. Demers and Julianne Kasinow defeated Mackey and Livia Gherman, 8-2 in the top spot, while Elizabeth Harrington and Kristina Chao posted an 8-2 win over Caitlin Crowley and Aubrey Brooks. UAlbany's Melissa Coughlin and Sarah Iannone put up a fight in No. 3 singles, but Kate Donnelly and Delaney Downing recorded an 8-5 win for Sacred Heart.
The Great Danes fared better in singles action to take the match victory. Gherman defeated Donnelly in three sets at the top position, with scores of 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4. Iannone and Coughlin also recorded singles victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectfully. Iannone defeated Kasinow, 6-4, 7-6, while Coughlin dropped the first set, 4-6, to Downing before taking the victory with 6-4, 6-2 scores. Harrington defeated Crowley, 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot, while Chao was split with Brooks, 3-6, 6-4, before Brooks retired due to injury.
UAlbany is now 5-1 in match play, and will close out the weekend at Marist on Sunday.
