Vestal, N.Y. ? Lauren Bates posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles and teamed up with Jillian Santos to record an 8-3 victory in the first doubles spot to lead Binghamton over UAlbany, 7-0, in America East Conference tennis action on Saturday, April 18.
Bates defeated UAlbany’s Susan Ma in the top singles slot without dropping a set, while Jillian Santos won at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-4, 6-4 over Kim Weltman. Yulia Smirnova defeated Charlotte Tatler at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and Marina Bykovskaya beat Holly Smith in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth spot. Yagmur Gone rallied to beat Laine Mackey in a marathon at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6, while Danyelle Shapiro defeated Aubrey Brooks, 6-4, 6-2 in the final singles match.
UAlbany (16-4, AE 1-1) was able to get one win in doubles play, as Tatler and Smith teamed up to dismantle Smirnova and Emma Leibowicz by a 10-8 score in the second slot. However, Binghamton (16-3, AE 4-0) was able to win the other doubles matches to cap the sweep. Ma and Mackey fell to Bates and Santos in No. 1 doubles and Weltman and Brooks were defeated by Shapiro and Bykovskaya at the third spot by identical scores of 8-3.
The Great Danes will head to Yale University in New Haven, Conn. next weekend for the America East Tournament. The championship begins on Friday, April 24 and runs through Sunday, April 26. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
