Blacksburg, Va. ? Freshman Holly Smith defeated Radford’s Emerald Lauzon, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to lead UAlbany on the first day of play at Virginia Tech’s 15th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
Smith advanced to the second round of play and will take on Liberty’s Fabiana Gouveia on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Senior Charlotte Tatler also advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Murray State’s Katelyn Fulcher in Flight D competition. Junior Kim Weltman will play in the consolation round of the Flight A competition after dropping a 6-2, 6-4 match to Radford’s Petra Dajevic on Friday. In the Great Danes’ final singles match of the day, sophomore Susan Ma fell to Virginia Tech’s Martha Blakely, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Smith and Tatler dropped an 8-1 decision to Catherine Kellner and Isabell Raich of Marshall. Ma and Weltman teamed up in Flight B doubles, falling to East Tennessee State’s Tara Sheets and Andra Voinea, 8-5. Both UAlbany doubles teams will compete in the consolation rounds tomorrow.
Competition resumes at 9 am on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
