BOSTON - University at Albany women's basketball forward Helene Haegerstrand earned America East Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, the league announced Friday.
 
Haegerstrand posts a 3.60 GPA through eight semesters with a major in business administration and a minor in sociology. This honor comes off a list of postseason accolades throughout her career.
 
In each of the senior's four years at UAlbany, Haegerstrand has earned a postseason award from the America East. Finishing fourth in the conference in points per game, she ranked in the top 10 in blocks per game, field goal percentage, and three point field goals per game. An all-around athlete, Haegerstrand led the Great Danes with a 39% accuracy from the three-point line while finishing in the top-three of the team in field goal percentage, points per game, rebounds per game, and blocks per game.
 
Haegerstrand's academic award is the latest in a line of awards since arriving on campus. A 2019-20 America East All-Rookie Team member, the senior has been named all-conference for three years in a row. Named First Team All-America East for two years in a row (2021-22 & 2022-23), she added an All-Academic nod following the 2022-23 season.
 
Haegerstrand is the third Great Dane to be named the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She joins Cara Caffell (2002), UAlbany's current Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, and Julie Forster (2013) as the preceding UAlbany women's basketball student-athletes to win the award.
