Women’s Basketball to Host Frozen-Themed Game

ALBANY, N.Y. - The UAlbany women's basketball team will close their home streak by hosting Stonehill on Saturday.
 
Following along with the theme of 'Frozen', fans who come dressed as their favorite Frozen character or wearing Frozen gear will receive a free kids ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket*. Once inside, fans will enjoy Frozen-themed activities including but not limited to games and sing-a-longs.
 
*Ticket must be in purple or grey level.

"Stonehill is a very disciplined and well-coached team. We need to lock in and be focused on the scout so that we can find success in the defensive end. We want to continue to play with pace offensively and have a balanced attack."
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Great Danes earned their fourth consecutive victory by defeating Dartmouth, 68-57, on Tuesday.
  • Junior Meghan Huerter scored a career-high 20 points to lead the team. Adding career-highs in field goals made (7) and three-pointers made (6), she went 7-10 from the field, including a 75% accuracy from outside the arc. 
  • As defensive pressure shifted in the second half, graduate student Helene Haegerstrand took the opportunity to score 18 total points, including 11 in the second half.
  • As a team, the Great Danes displayed lights-out shooting making 10-17 from downtown.
  • Senior Kayla Cooper tallied a team-best nine rebounds, including five offensive boards, while recording 16 points.
  • Freshman Deja Evans finished with two blocks in a strong defensive effort.
 
GREAT DANE REWIND
  • UAlbany has started its season with eight wins and two losses.
  • The Great Danes opened their season with a down-to-the-buzzer win over Merrimack (Nov. 6) before falling to Fordham in a one-possession loss on November 10 and hosting Division III opponent Sarah Lawrence for a 91-point victory (Nov. 13).
  • On a record-breaking night against the Gryphons, the Great Danes notched the highest single-game point total (118), single-half point total (61), and single-game assist total (37) in program history.
  • After UAlbany took to the road to defeat St. Bonaventure, 66-56, on November 16, head coach Colleen Mullen and the Great Danes defeated Cornell (Nov. 22) for the first time in Mullen's tenure.
  • Before earning an Albany Cup victory for the Grand Opening of Broadview Center (Dec. 2), UAlbany headed to Stanford (Nov. 26) for their second loss of the season.
  • Most recently, the Great Danes added three consecutive victories over CCSU (Dec. 6), Marist (Dec. 9), and Dartmouth (Dec. 12) to make it four-straight wins.
  • Kayla Cooper leads the Great Danes on all sides of the court - offense (14.4 points per game), defense (7.4 rebounds per game), and in transition (18 steals).
  • Graduate student Sarah Karpell owns the team-high in assists with 32.

  • UAlbany is second in the America East with 8.50 steals per game (85 total) and first in turnover margin with 2.40.
  • Turning defense into offense, the Great Danes have averaged 19.2 points off turnovers.

  • The Great Danes are ranked second in the America East in Team 3-Point FG Percentage (37.0%).
  • Accurate shooting has made UAlbany have the second highest-scoring offense in the conference (64.6 ppg).

  • Kayla Cooper is 30 points away from scoring 1,000 career points. Averaging 14.4 points this season, Cooper could reach this milestone within the next three games.

  • The Great Danes have utilized great teamwork to fuel their success so far this season.
  • In 10 contests, the Great Danes have had five different players lead the team in points.

BETTER BACK-UP
  • UAlbany's bench has scored 18.8 points per game this season.
  • Meghan Huerter leads the way, averaging 8.0 points while also ranking fourth on the team in rebounds with 35.
  • Fellow junior Abby Ray is third on the team in assists (16) and offensive rebounds (15).
  • Recording nine steals and three blocks, sophomore Gabriela Falcão has had an impact on defense.
 
ABOUT STONEHILL
  • After 10 contests in the 2023-24 season, the Skyhawks are still on the hunt for their first victory.
  • Stonehill opened the season with losses against Northeastern (Nov. 6) and DePaul (Nov. 9). 
  • After consecutive losses at home to Lehigh (Nov. 11) and Bryant (Nov. 14), the Skyhawks continued the pattern on the road at Buffalo (Nov. 17) and Niagara (Nov. 19). 
  • Stonehill lost three consecutive home games to Utah Tech (Nov. 25), Holy Cross (Nov. 29), and New Hampshire (Dec. 6). 
  • Most recently, Stonehill fell on the road at Boston College (Dec. 12).
  • Losing by an average of 25.5, the Skyhawks have held just one opponent to a single-digit loss - Niagara (71-69).
  • Jada Thornton leads the scoring with 9.5 points per game.
  • Maureen Stapleton holds the team-high in rebounds with 7.7 per contest.
  • The main floor general for Stonehill is Sharn Hayward who has tallied 2.3 assists per game this season.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS
  • The Great Danes won the first contest of the series on December 14, 2022.
  • Scrapping out a 47-46 win, returning student-athlete Helene Haegerstrand led the winning effort with 13 points and 50% shooting from behind the arc.
  • Former Great Dane Morgan Haney made a free throw with three seconds left to secure the win.
 
DRIVE THE LANE WITH UALBANY HOOPS
  • UAlbany will continue its partnership with ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team and City Line Bar & Grill for the third consecutive year.
  • Coaches Colleen Mullen and Dwayne Killings, along with select student-athletes, will join ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team's Charlie Voelker and Dan Bahl every Monday from 6-7 pm live from City Line Bar & Grill for a weekly segment entitled 'Drive the Lane with UAlbany Hoops'.
  • Fans are invited to come to City Line Bar & Grill to join Coach Mullen, Coach Kills, the student-athletes, and the ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team crew. 
  • Food and drink specials will be available on a weekly basis as the teams embark on their new seasons and talk hoops every Monday.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • UAlbany holds the sole lead in the conference with an 8-2 record.
  • Maine, Vermont, NJIT, and Bryant are all tied with six wins each. The Black Bears hold a slight lead with four losses compared to the other teams' five losses.
  • Binghamton and UMBC are tied for seventh with two wins in 10 contests.
  • UMass Lowell rounds out the conference still fighting for its first win after nine matchups.
