Women's Basketball Readies for Stony Brook and Pink Game

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany women's basketball team will host Stony Brook for its final regular-season game.
 
Pom poms will be handed out to the first 300 fans in attendance. The Great Danes will be honoring and raising awareness for those suffering and those who have survived breast cancer.
 
Masks are required to attend UAlbany's indoor athletic events.

GREAT DANE REWIND
  • With a defense-first mentality, UAlbany has risen to number one in the nation, holding its opponents to just 48.4 points per game.
  • In addition to scoring defense, the Great Danes are 35th in the country, allowing just a .364 field goal percentage from their opponents.
  • UAlbany opened the season on a strong note, defeating Hofstra (11/10) for the first time in program history. The 29-point victory over the Pride served as the first of seven games, so far, in which the Great Danes won by at least 20 points.
  • The Great Danes closed their non-conference slate with a 7-4 record.
  • UAlbany has, so far, split the Hartford and Vermont series and swept NJIT, Binghamton, UMBC, UMass Lowell, and New Hampshire.
  • UAlbany was undefeated at home (13-0), until the second-to-last game of the season when Maine beat the Great Danes, 49-45, on February 23.
  • Junior Helene Haegerstrand (339, 12.1 per game) and sophomore Kayla Cooper (317, 11.3 per game) lead the team with their respective point tallies.
  • Redshirt-sophomore Abby Robinson leads the team, shooting 75% (6-8) from 28 minutes of play in 10 games. Senior Lucia Decortes holds a .547 (64-117) shooting percentage, leading all players who have seen the court for more than 40 minutes this season.
  • Haegerstrand leads from outside the arc with a .380 (49-129) shooting percentage.
  • Cooper leads the team as the only player with over 150 rebounds. She has totaled 199 (7.1 pg) so far with 125 defensive and 74 offensive rebounds. Decortes passed the 100-rebound mark against Maine, totaling 128 so far.
  • Freshman Lilly Phillips owns a team-high 64 assists. Redshirt-sophomore Morgan Haney is close behind with 61.
  • Cooper (37) and Haney (36) share the transition spotlight with their respective steal totals. 
  • Decortes has compiled a team-high 43 blocks. Eleven players on the 13-person roster have totaled at least two blocks.
  • Every single player from the 13-person roster saw action and contributed with a point or an assist in the season-opening game - Hofstra. 
  • Of the 1,605 points scored in 28 games, the bench has tallied 427 points. This includes half (26) of the 52 points scored at Merrimack (11/16), almost half (29) of the 60 points scored against Bryant (12/1), almost half (32) of the 65 points scored against Canisius (12/15), and almost half (28) of the 61 points scored against New Hampshire (2/16).
  • As a team, UAlbany is hitting 41.0% from the field, 32.3% outside the arc, and 67.0% from the free-throw line. 
  • The Great Danes are averaging 57.3 points per game, 35.6 rebounds per game, and 12.6 assists per game.
 
ABOUT STONY BROOK
  • The Seawolves are 23-4 on the season. They currently lead the America East with a 14-3 conference record.
  • Throughout the non-conference portion of the season, Stony Brook only lost to Fordham (12/2). The Long Island SUNY beat Delaware State (11/9), Longwood (11/12), St. John's (11/14), Rutgers (11/16), Iona (11/20), Columbia (11/24), St. Francis Brooklyn (11/28), Penn (12/10), and Washington State (12/19). 
  • The Seawolves opened conference play with a loss at NJIT (12/30) before winning 11-straight America East games.
  • Stony Brook went on to take UMBC twice and Hartford once with a loss against Maine and, most recently, UMass Lowell.
  • Anastasia Warren leads the team with 12.6 points per game (316 total).
  • India Pagan leads the team's defensive efforts, tallying 6.6 per game for 165 total, 108 defensive, and 57 offensive. She also leads with 24 blocks.
  • Gigi Gonzalez has tallied team-highs with 103 assists and 45 steals.
  • As a team, Stony Brook is hitting 42.0% from the field, 31.2% outside the arc, and 75.6% from the free-throw line.
  • The Seawolves are averaging 68.5 points per game, 39.4 rebounds per game, and 13.0 assists per game.
 
SERIES AGAINST THE SEAWOLVES
  • The Great Danes hold the lead in the all-time series, 36-30.
  • Current head coach, Colleen Mullen, is 1-7 against the Seawolves.
  • During her first season with UAlbany, the Great Danes split the game results with one win and one loss. 
  • Earlier this season, Stony Brook took the win at their home court, 58-47, on Jan. 22.
 
AROUND THE AMERICA EAST
  • Stony Brook leads the conference with a 14-3 record.
  • With a 10-game win streak, Maine is second with a 13-3 record.
  • UAlbany and Vermont are tied for third with a 12-5 America East record.
  • NJIT (9-7) is in fifth with the final winning record of the conference.
  • UMass Lowell sits with a 7-8 league record for sixth place.
  • New Hampshire won its most recent contest for its fourth win and a seventh-place ranking.
  • Binghamton and Hartford are tied with a 3-13 record.
  • UMBC rounds out the conference with two wins. 
  • Following the close of the non-conference season Stony Brook (9-1), UAlbany (7-4), and Vermont (6-5) were the only three teams with a winning record. NJIT (5-6), Binghamton (4-6), UMass Lowell (3-6), Maine (3-7), New Hampshire (3-8), UMBC (1-9), and Hartford (0-11) each had losing records before the start of the conference season.

WHAT'S UP, PRESEASON
  • The Great Dane women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. With six first-place votes and 78 total points, Stony Brook was voted to finish first with Maine just behind (74 points, three first-place votes). 
  • UAlbany added four new players to the roster for the 2021-22 season - Koi Sims, Lilly Phillips, Abby Ray, and Freja Werth

  • UAlbany has expanded its partnership with ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team and City Line Bar & Grill.
  • Coaches Colleen Mullen and Dwayne Killings, along with select student-athletes, will join ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team's Charlie Voelker and Dan Bahl every Monday from 6-7 pm live from City Line Bar & Grill for a weekly segment entitled 'Drive the Lane with UAlbany Hoops'.
  • Fans are invited to come out to City Line Bar & Grill to join Coach Mullen, Coach Kills, the student-athletes, and the ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team crew. 
  • Food and drink specials will be available on a weekly basis as the teams embark on their new seasons and talk hoops every Monday.
