BOSTON – For the first time since 2005, the University at Albany sent a representative to the USA Indoor National Championships. Briana Cherry-Bronson competed in the women's weight throw, where she placed seventh with a mark of 64'-9.25”.
Cherry-Bronson, a graduate transfer from Florida State, recently won the weight throw at the America East Indoor Championships, and is the UAlbany school record holder in the event, at 65'-6.25”. She attended NCAA Indoor National Championships last year, where she placed 12th overall. Her best mark this season places her 28th on the national performance list, and individual qualifiers need to rank within the top-16 to earn qualifying berths into national championships. Her all-time best mark of 68'-10” would rank 13th nationally.
The women's weight throw featured a field of 11 competitors. The top eight through the first three throws were awarded three additional throws. Cherry-Bronson's best throw was her third, and she fouled only her second attempt. She was also the only collegiate athlete in the event, with her competitors hailing from professional clubs, or competing unattached.
Cherry-Bronson will remain in Boston through the weekend and reunite with her UAlbany teammates at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center for BU's Last Chance Meet on Sunday. It will be her final chance to record a top-16 national mark in the weight throw. Regardless, next weekend Cherry-Bronson and her teammates will return to Boston one last time for ECAC Championships.
