BALTIMORE, MD. – Despite a one-player advantage in the second half, University at Albany men's soccer (5-6-1, 0-2-0 AE) fell 1-0 at UMBC (7-2-2, 1-0-1 AE) on Wednesday afternoon. The Danes return home to face Hartford on Wednesday looking to end a three-game losing skid.
“We played a lot of really good soccer today,” said head coach Trevor Gorman. It was one of our better performances of the year against the top team in our league. We're disappointed to not get something out of the match, but we did everything right to break them down. We come back encouraged about what we are capable of doing in the final six games.”
Afonso Pinheiro rolled a shot to the UMBC goal early in the half, but the Retrievers had the first quality looks of the game. Eric Orologio made a save on a Michael Scott shot out of the corner, but the rebound came down to the foot of Kennedy O'Shea as Orologio returned to position. Bernardo Mattos made a goal line clear to keep the score tied at zero.
On UAlbany's first corner kick of the game in the 12th minute, Philip Persson played the ball short to Moosah Khanat. Khanat switched fields to Luke Palmateer, who fired near post through traffic. Billy Heavner made the diving save.
After 10 more minutes of back and forth action, UMBC got on the board with a free kick just outside the box. Scott connected with Gregg Hauck for a header to give the Retrievers a 1-0 lead. An offsides call against the Danes brought back a goal that would've tied the contest in the 27th minute.
With just under 10 to play in the opening stanza, Khanat put a ball into the box 25 yards from goal. The sophomore transfer found Carlos Clark for a header that went over the crossbar. Leo Melgar and Clark combined for another attempt off of a corner kick moments later, but Clark's header attempt sailed wide.
To end the first half, UMBC's Darius Madison was assessed a yellow card prior to a free kick for the Retrievers deep in UAlbany's end. As players ran on to the ball in the six-yard box, Madison took down Orologio in the air. He was hit with hit second yellow of the game, therefore a red card and ejection from the game.
As the second half got underway, UMBC struggled to adjust to playing down one player. Martin Gorrie had two quality looks on target, but the senior co-captain came up empty.
The Purple & Gold took 10 shots in the second half, but only four of them were on goal. Gorman's squad also had four corners in the final 45 minutes.
Defensively, Orologio made four saves in 90 minutes of action, and the UAlbany defense held UMBC without a corner kick.
