Henry scored 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, while also recording
six rebounds, five assists and four steals, leading UAlbany to a 57-32 win over
Stony Brook in America East Conference women's basketball action on Sunday
afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. The Great Danes, who moved to 3-0 in league
play, jumped to the top of the conference standings as one of two undefeated
teams in the America East.
UAlbany
jumped out to an 11-4 advantage after 3-pointers from Ebone Henry and Lindsey
Lowrie kicked off the game. With the Great Danes up, 9-4, Henry recorded one of
her four steals, intercepting a pass into the paint. She beat the Stony Brook defense
in transition, and passed the ball to Adrienne Jones on the left side of the
lane, who hit her shot to give UAlbany the seven-point lead at 14:45. The
Seawolves cut the lead to 11-8, taking advantage of UAlbany turnovers on
back-to-back possessions, with 11:26 on the clock.
However,
UAlbany went on an 11-4 run to build up a 10-point lead with 4:24 left to play.
Megan Craig and Henry nailed baskets a minute apart before Lowrie dropped in a
long jump shot to put the Great Danes on top, 22-12. UAlbany used a stifling
full-court press to continue to hold onto its lead. Henry nailed her second
trey of the game at 3:03 to put the Great Danes up, 25-12. A long-range shot
from Sam Landers pulled the Seawolves back within ten, 25-15. Julie Forster hit
one-of-two from the free throw line, but Stony Brook got the last basket of the
half from Destiny Jacobs to set the score at 26-17 as the teams went to the
locker rooms at the half.
UAlbany
scored its first six points of the second half from the free throw line, while
Stony Brook cut the lead to 21-30 with 14:09 left to play. Jessica Previlon
nailed two shots from the charity stripe, pulling to within 23-30, before Henry
also drained two free throws, putting the Great Danes back on top by nine,
32-23, with 13:26 on the clock. Keyana Williams scored the first field goal for
UAlbany at 13:20, after recording a steal on a Stony Brook inbounds pass, and
Henry went 2-for-2 on another trip to the line to push the Great Danes'
advantage to 36-23 with just under 13 minutes to play.
UAlbany
scored the game's next 10 points to push the lead to 23, on three consecutive
baskets by Henry, which put the Great Danes on top, 46-23, with 8:41 left to
play. Stony Brook ended the UAlbany run, which capped at 20-0, with a made free
throw by Gerda Gatling at 5:15. A steady Great Dane defense effectively held
Stony Brook without a point for eight and a half minutes, and limited the
Seawolves to just two field goals over 17:30 in the second. Margarita Rosario scored her first
points in a UAlbany uniform with a 3-pointer with 1:31 left to play. Stony
Brook was able to hit two shots in the closing minute, to seal up the 25-point
victory for the Great Danes.
Jacobs
finished with a team-high nine points for Stony Brook (4-12, AE 1-2), while
Tamiel Murray led the Seawolves off the boards with five rebounds.
Lowrie
added eight points for UAlbany, going 2-for-2 from 3-point range, and recorded
two steals. UAlbany shot 54.5-percent (18-33) from the floor, including going
5-for-9 (55.6 percent) from long distance. The Great Danes forced the Seawolves
into 23 turnovers, including 15 steals, and outrebounded Stony Brook, 28-20.
UAlbany
(9-7, AE 3-0) will return to action on Wednesday, visiting New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
