Buffalo, N.Y. - Courtney VandeBovenkamp scored a season-high 14 points to lead Canisius to a 64-60 comeback victory over UAlbany in non-conference women's basketball action on Thursday evening at the Koessler Athletic Center.
After UAlbany took an 11-point lead on a 5-0 run to start the second half on a 3-pointer by Kate Cronin and a layup by Ebone Henry, Canisius battled back, holding the Great Danes without a field goal for the next six minutes. Jen Lennox kicked off a 9-0 Golden Griffs run, hitting a long-range shot at 15:50, before VandeBovenkamp knocked down a jumper and pulled Canisius to within 36-34. The Golden Griffs took their first lead of the second half on a trey by Jen Morabito, but UAlbany jumped back in front on a jumper by Lindsey Lowrie with 8:34 left, taking a 45-44 advantage. Jamie Ruttle, who finished with 11 points in the game, nailed to free throws to give Canisius its final lead.
The Golden Griffs then posted a 12-4 run to pull ahead, 59-51, using a conventional 3-point play and a fast-break layup by Ashley Wilkes and a shot from downtown by Ruttle. However, the Great Danes would not go down easy, as Lowrie nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 61-60 with just over a minute left to play. A jumper by Wilkes hit a jumper in the lane to give Canisius a three-point lead with 23.5 seconds on the clock, and UAlbany was unable to convert a jumper on the other end of the floor. Ruttle made one-of-two from the charity stripe to set the final score with 11.2 ticks to go.
Henry paced UAlbany, recording her first double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while also totaling four steals. Lowrie added 14 points, while the Great Danes shot 34.9 percent in the game.
UAlbany (6-5) will return to action after the holidays, traveling to Miami for the FIU Invitational. The Great Danes will take on the host Golden Panthers on Dec. 29 before facing off against either Auburn or Charlotte on Dec. 30.
