Women's Lacrosse Visits Stony Brook for First Place

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse team will visit Stony Brook on Friday in the Great Danes’ third-straight matchup against an undefeated-in-conference opponent.  The game will also be a rematch of the last seven America East title games.  The winner of the game will take sole possession of first place in the conference and be on the inside track to host the conference tournament in May.

UAlbany (8-5, 4-0 AE) last pulled out a tight victory in a thriller against New Hampshire over the weekend.  The Great Danes jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead before the Wildcats stormed back to take an 11-9 lead with 7:41 left in the second half.  UAlbany scored each of the last three goals, including both the tying-goal by Julia Imbo and the game-winner by Madison Conway within the last minute.

Conway’s game winner came off an assist from Sam Tortora.  It was Tortora’s 84th career assist, setting a new program record in the category.  She passes the previous program record of 83 set by Maureen Keggins.

For their efforts in two games last week in which they each scored seven goals, Conway and Hailey Carroll were named America East Offensive and Rookie of the Week, respectively.  Conway earned her first such award while Carroll earned the rookie recognition for the third-straight week and fifth time this season.  Carroll has scored three or more goals in each of her last five games.

Stony Brook last hosted #17 Johns Hopkins, defeating the Blue Jays 12-9.  It was the Seawolves second victory this season over a ranked opponent, having defeated then #13 Colorado in the 2019 opener.  Stony Brook has won each of their last four since falling by one to then #20 Florida.

Stony Brook spent much of last season ranked as the #1 team in the country, running through the regular season undefeated and drawing the five-seed in the NCAA Tournament following their sixth-consecutive America East Tournament title.  The Seawolves ultimately lost to national runner-up Boston College in the quarterfinal round.  UAlbany and Stony Brook have been opponents in each of the last seven America East championship games.  The Seawolves started the season ranked #5 in the preseason coaches poll but have since fallen out of the rankings.

UAlbany and Stony Brook are the last two remaining teams in the America East with undefeated conference records.  UAlbany handed its two previous opponents, Vermont and New Hampshire, their first America East defeats.  The Wildcats are currently third behind UAlbany and Stony Brook, ahead of UMBC for the fourth and final spot in the 2019 America East Tournament with three games to play.

Following the game against Stony Brook, UAlbany will play its final road game of the 2019 regular season on Saturday, April 20 at Hartford.  UAlbany will close the regular season at home against UMBC on Saturday, April 27.
