Five-Set Thriller Ends in Victory

SCORE: UAlbany 3, Northeastern 2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11)

SHORT STORY: In a nail-biting five-set match, the Great Danes powered through to earn the win over Northeastern, Sunday evening. 

KEY STATS
  • Junior outside hitter Pinar Erol led the team with 16 kills.
  • Senior middle blocker Campbell Robinson followed with 13 kills while earning a team-high four aces.
  • Senior setter Madison Hess recorded a season-high 47 assists, and earned a double-double with 12 digs.
  • Junior middle blocker Mina Benucci put up a team-high six blocks, including two solo blocks.
  • Junior libero Kasia Barletta collected a team-best 25 digs. 
  • As a team, the Great Danes held a .333 hitting percentage through the fifth set and hit with a near-30% accuracy (.297) in the third set.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A kill by Mina Benucci powered the Great Danes for an 8-3 lead early on.
  • However, the Huskies answered back with an 11-2 scoring run and ran away with the lead, 17-11.
  • After being down by six, UAlbany fought back with a 7-1 point run for the set advantage, 23-22. 
  • Northeastern denied the Great Danes' comeback and sealed the set one win.
  • Set two started out evenly matched as each team exchanged points, but the Huskies held a one-point lead over the Great Danes, 15-14.
  • Set two remained neck-and-neck, but three consecutive kills gave momentum to UAlbany as they won set two. 
  • In similar fashion, set three started out close as the Great Danes had a narrow advantage over the Huskies, 15-14. 
  • A three-point scoring streak, including two kills by Campbell Robinson, gave UAlbany the late lead.
  • The Great Danes secured the match advantage, 2-1, after a set-three win. 
  • Northeastern responded with a hot start to set four, going on two separate four-point runs. 
  • UAlbany began to close in on Northeastern, but remained four-points behind, 20-16. 
  • Northeastern ultimately evened the match, 2-2.
  • The Huskies mirrored set three to lead 4-0 in set five, but UAlbany didn't back down scoring seven-straight points. 
  • A kill by Pinar Erol sealed the match for the Great Danes in extra points, 15-11.

NEXT: The Great Danes will head to Indiana to face Purdue in the Stacey Clark Classic, Thursday (Sept. 17) at 7:00 pm EST.
