Great Danes Close Weekend in Five-Set Thriller

SCORE: Army 3, UAlbany 2 (21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 15-10)

SHORT STORY: In a nail-biting matchup, the Great Danes and the Black Knights headed to five sets, but Army emerged victorious, Sunday afternoon. 

KEY STATS
  • Freshman outside hitter Lily Lott led the Great Danes in kills with 14.
  • Freshman setter Addy Bianchini contributed a team-high 39 assists. 
  • Junior middle blocker Mina Benucci and Lott each earned one solo block.
  • Bianchini led the team with 16 digs, and junior Kasia Barletta right behind with 15. Junior outside hitter Pinar Erol collected 12. 
  • Senior Campbell Robinson and Lott each earned three blocks. Junior Sabrina Kinkaid also earned 2 blocks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Set one started off as a close game, as UAlbany and Army each exchanged points reaching 7-7, but Army went on a five-point run to take the lead at 12-7. 
  • The Great Danes fought to cut the deficit against the Black Knights to 15-14. 
  • With a hard-fought comeback, UAlbany took set one, 25-21. 
  • In another close set between the Black Knights and the Great Danes, they were neck-and-neck with Army up, 15-14. 
  • The Black Knights gained momentum and went on a four-point run, taking the lead at 22-18. Army officially took the second set, 25-19.
  • The Great Danes scored three-straight points to start the third set at 4-2. 
  • In a competitive matchup, UAlbany increased their lead on a five-point run at 16-12. 
  • The Great Danes held on to the lead for the remainder of the set to win, 25-22, and take the advantage in the match, 2-1.
  • The Black Knights responded by starting the fourth set with a six-point lead, 12-6. 
  • Army continued to increase their commanding lead, 22-13, before forcing a fifth set with a 25-14 win.
  • Upon starting the fifth set, both teams showed fire, with Army claiming a two-point lead over UAlbany, 12-10.
  • The Black Knights secured the match win with three final points. 

NEXT: The Great Danes will head to Ithaca for the Cornell Invitational and take on Syracuse on Friday (Sept. 4) at 3:00pm, followed by the host, Cornell, and Howard on Saturday (Sept.5) at 11:00am and 3:00pm.
