Three Top-10 Golfers Lead Women's Golf in Runner-Up Finish at MAAC Championship

FINISH: 2nd - 901 (+37) - out of nine teams

LOCATION: Disney's Palm Golf Course - Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes completed the season at the MAAC Championships with a second-place finish.

COACH COLLEEN CASHMAN: "Ultimately, we are all disappointed finishing in second place for the third year in a row. We came out of the gates in round one very hot! We fired a season-best score of four over par including two stellar rounds of two under par 70s and just one shot away from first place. Unfortunately, we had a stretch of five holes at the end of [Saturday's] round where we gave away way too many shots and put us behind the eight-ball.

"We knew for today's round we would need to come out and shoot some career-best scores if we wanted to have a shot. We got out of the gate hot today and closed the gap within 10 shots of the lead, but we just couldn't gain any more ground. We are disappointed for sure, but we had some positives to take away including three players in the Top 10 and Freshman of the Year. Mariel [Tee] battled her little heart out for the second year in a row leading this team the entire tournament and Kate [Richards] shot a career-best in round one of two-under-par. Malene first her lowest round of the season and Lucia really came out with the fire I knew she has in her to end this spring season on a high note. On to next year …"

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Throughout the three-day, three-round competition, the Great Danes held stable at second place.
  • UAlbany scored a 292 to open the tournament. The team's +4 proved to be a season-low single-round team score. The Great Danes finished the day just one stroke behind Quinnipiac.
  • Tied for second place individually, both junior Mariel Tee and junior Katelin Richards shot two-under par in round one.
  • Holding in the top 10, freshman Lucia Esteban totaled 73 strokes in the first round.
  • Each of the teams competing was unable to earn a better score on day two.
  • Seeing a rough stretch to finish the day, the Great Danes held second place but Quinnipiac gained a 17-stroke lead.
  • Tee and Richards continued to lead UAlbany after the second round.
  • Tee's 73 in round two kept her tied for second while Richards' 76 put her in sixth-place overall.
  • Junior Malene Clausen finished the second round with the team's third-best score - a 78.
  • On day three, the Great Danes improved upon their day-two score with a 303 but were unable to overcome Quinnipiac's third-straight sub-300 score.
  • With just one golfer coming in under par, Esteban's even-par round three tied for the second-best score of the day.
  • Clausen followed the rookie with a +2 throughout round three.
  • As a team, the Great Danes had three golfers finish in the top 10 - Tee (T-5th), Esteban (8th), and Richards (T-9th). Clausen added a top-15 finish in a tie for 14th.
  • Throughout the competition, UAlbany compiled 34 birdies. Tee led with nine while Richards followed with eight and Clausen totaled seven.
