Men’s Basketball Hosts NJIT for Senior Night

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's basketball team is set to host America East foe NJIT this Saturday night for the final home game of the 2022-23 season. The team will honor four individuals pregame in a senior ceremony – Trey Hutcheson, Sarju Patel, Gerald Drumgoole Jr., and Da'Kquan Davis. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm from the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College and will be broadcast on ESPN3 and ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team in Albany.

Leading the Pack
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. continues to lead the Great Danes in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game. That ties him for second in the entire conference with New Hampshire's Clearance Daniels (15.4) both trailing Bryant's leading scorer Gross-Bullock (17.8). Drumgoole Jr. is also averaging 5.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.1 steals.
  • Jonathan Beagle has now won the conference's Rookie of the Week Award eight times. That places him at the top of the UAlbany history books for the most awards won by a rookie since Jon Iati (2003-04). Beagle is averaging 12.2 points and ranks top five in the entire conference for rebounds, averaging 7.4. Beagle has also recorded five double-doubles in his first season as a Great Dane.
  • Freshman Marcus Jackson has made himself a main stay in the Great Danes' starting lineup, starting in 18 of 26 games. The rookie hasn't been taking very many shots but has been effective while doing so – shooting at a clip of 47.7%.
  • UAlbany is averaging 66.8 points per game with opponents averaging 75.4 points.
  • The Great Danes are shooting 41.4% from the field, 32.8% from beyond the arc, and 71.2% from the charity stripe.
  • UAlbany averages 33.2 rebounds per game with opponents averaging 33.9.
 
Last Time Out
The UAlbany men's basketball team was unable to mount a late comeback on the road, falling to the University of Maine by a score of 74-72.
  • Da'Kquan Davis led all scorers with 26 points, going 10-17 from the field and 6-10 from deep. He also led the team with two steals.
  • Jonathan Beagle finished with a double-double for the second game in a row. The young big produced 18 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists.
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. scored 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. He went a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe.
  • Trey Hutcheson finished with nine points, hitting three long balls on four attempts.
  • UAlbany shot 52.0% (26-50) from the field and went 11-23 from three-point range. Maine shot 49.0% (25-51) from the field and went 5-16 from deep.
  • Maine won the rebounding war, 28-26.
 
Scouting NJIT
NJIT comes into Saturday's matchup with an overall record of 7-20 and a 4-10 conference mark. The Highlanders are currently riding a three-game losing streak, dropping games to Binghamton, Vermont, and Bryant. The team's last win came on Fe. 11, a 65-50 home win over Maine. The Highlanders almost broke the winless streak their last time out, falling by just one point, 78-79, to new America East foe Bryant on Wednesday night.
  • The Highlanders are averaging 67.6 points per game, with opponents averaging 72.5.
  • The team is shooting 43.0% from the field, 34.6% from beyond the arc, and 66.0% from the charity stripe.
  • Miles Coleman leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per outing. The senior is shooting 40.3% from the field and 37.3% from beyond the arc.
  • Adam Hess is the team's top shooter, sinking 55 three-pointers this year at a success rate of 45.1%. He's averaging 11.1 points per game, having started in 21 of 26 opportunities.
  • Kevin Osawe is the final Highlander averaging double figures at 11.2 points per game. He also leads the team in rebounding by far, pulling down nine boards per game at 6 feet 7 inches.
 
Last Time Against NJIT
UAlbany last played NJIT on Jan. 14, a road matchup in which the Highlanders won by a score of 74-67. The score was tied after the first half of three, but solid shooting from the Highlanders in the second half put the home team up by double-digits – a deficit the Great Danes were unable to overcome. UAlbany entered the game with only seven dressed players, using a short bench throughout the contest. The loss is the first the Great Danes have suffered at the hands of the Highlanders, having gone 10-0 in all previous contests.
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all players with 29 points. UAlbany's leading scorer knocked down five three-pointers and led the team in assists (5) and steals (2). He was the only Great Dane to play all 40 minutes.
  • Da'Kquan Davis finished with 19 points, entering into the starting lineup one again. The graduate student had 14 first-half points, finishing the night with four three-pointers. He finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Freshman Jonathan Beagle was the final UAlbany player in double figures, finishing with 11 points. The big man finished with eight boards to end the game.
  • UAlbany shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field and 37% (10-27) from three. NJIT shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field and 46.7% (7-15) from three.
  • UAlbany won the rebounding war, 39-37.
  • The Great Danes had 12 turnovers, the Highlanders had just eight.
 
#AEHoops Notes (Feb. 20)
For the seventh-straight year, Vermont has claimed at least a share of the America East men's basketball regular-season crown. The Catamounts can secure the No. 1 seed for the #AEPlayoffs with its next win.
  • Vermont has won at least a share of the regular-season title for the seventh-straight year. Only Gonzaga has a longer active streak (10).
  • The Catamounts top the league standings at 11-2 are the first team to secure an home #AEPlayoffs game.
  • UMass Lowell has won five of its last six games and sits in second place at 9-5.
  • The River Hawks, who have scored 80 more points in their last three games, have won a Division I school-record 22 games.
  • Binghamton (8-5), Bryant (7-6), UNH (7-6) and UMBC (7-7) follow in the standings and are fighting for a top four #AEPlayoffs seed.
  • Maine's 11 wins are its most since the 2012-13 season.
  • The Black Bears' Kellen Tynes' 3.2 steals per game leads the country.
 
Conference positioning will again prove key for the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs. Every round of the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs will take place on the higher seed's home court and earning home court advantage will prove crucial once again. The league champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, where America East teams have won nine games all-time, including UMBC's historic upset of Virginia in 2018.

  • Compiled 23 points, six rebounds, four assists and seven steals in Maine's lone game of the week, a win over UAlbany on Saturday.

  • This is Tynes' second career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Jonathan Beagle, UAlbany – Fr., Forward, Hudson Falls, N.Y.
  • Averaged 17.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for UAlbany.
  • Had 16 points and 15 boards to lead the Great Danes to a win over UMBC on Wednesday.
  • Followed up with 18 points and 13 boards vs. Maine on Saturday.
  • This is Beagle's eighth Rookie of the Week honor of the season.
  • His eight Rookie of the Week honors are tied for second-most in conference history.
