Go Gold! Men’s Basketball Returns Home, Hosts Binghamton

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's basketball team returns to the McDonough Sports Complex on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) this Thursday night for a home matchup against Binghamton. The event is marked as a "Gold Out" with fans encouraged to wear their gold attire as the team rocks its gold jerseys. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+ and ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team in Albany.

UAlbany and Hudson Valley students can attend UAlbany basketball home games all season long for FREE. Students who attend games simply need to bring their school-issued ID cards to gain admission to the McDonough Sports Complex.

Leading the Pack
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. paces the Great Danes with 15.3 points per game. UAlbany's leading scorer is coming off his most prolific game of the season in which he dropped 29 points, going 5-15 from three and 9-22 from the field overall. Drumgoole Jr. has played all 40 minutes in each of the last three games.
  • It was announced on Monday this week that Jonathan Beagle has won the conference's Rookie of the Week award for the fifth time this season. Last week, Beagle averaged 16 points six rebounds, and three assists. He scored a career-high 21 against Bryant, going 9-15 from the field.
  • Da'Kquan Davis continues to find his groove for the Great Danes, re-entering the starting lineup against NJIT. In that game, the graduate transfer dropped 19 points, his second-highest total this season. In his last seven games, Davis has reached double-digit scoring numbers in five contests.
  • Sarju Patel is another Great Dane that seems to have found his stride. The Virginia native had three-straight games in which he reached double-digit scoring numbers, having games with 10 points, 23 points (season-high) and 12 points. IN his last outing however, Patel was held scoreless.
  • The Great Danes are averaging 67.9 points per game with opponents averaging 74.8.
  • UAlbany is shooting 40.9% from the field, 34.0% from three, and 70.0% from the free throw line.
 
Last Time Out
The UAlbany men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday night to the NJIT Highlanders, 67-74. The score was tied after the first half of three, but solid shooting from the Highlanders in the second half put the home team up by double-digits – a deficit the Great Danes were unable to overcome. UAlbany entered the game with only seven dressed players, using a short bench throughout the contest. The loss is the first the Great Danes have suffered at the hands of the Highlanders, having gone 10-0 in all previous contests. 
  • Gerald Drumgoole Jr. led all players with 29 points. UAlbany's leading scorer knocked down five three-pointers and led the team in assists (5) and steals (2). He was the only Great Dane to play all 40 minutes.
  • Da'Kquan Davis finished with 19 points, entering into the starting lineup one again. The graduate student had 14 first-half points, finishing the night with four three-pointers. He finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Freshman Jonathan Beagle was the final UAlbany player in double figures, finishing with 11 points. The big man finished with eight boards to end the game.
  • UAlbany shot 39.7% (23-58) from the field and 37% (10-27) from three. NJIT shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field and 46.7% (7-15) from three.
  • UAlbany won the rebounding war, 39-37.
  • The Great Danes had 12 turnovers, the Highlanders had just eight.
 
Scouting Binghamton
The Bearcats come into Thursday's matchup with an overall record of 7-10 and a conference mark of 3-1. At home, the team has gone 5-4. ON the road however, the team has gone just 2-6. After starting off conference play with a loss to Bryant, Binghamton has rattled off three-straight wins over UNH (68-50), NJIT (72-71), and UMass Lowell (66-65).
  • Binghamton's Jacob Falko was the lone returning first-team All-America East Team member from last season on the preseason All-League squad. He currently paces the Bearcats with 14.6 points per game, coming off a contest in which he scored 19. The 6-3 senior guard shoots a team-best 49.2% from the field and leads the team with 23 three-pointers.
  • Armon Harried is averaging 12.2 points for Binghamton, leading the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. A 6-5 junior, Harried has scored in double-figures in  five-straight games, dating back to December.
  • Miles Gibson is the final Bearcat averaging double figures with 10.2 points per game. The grad student is shooting 40.6% from the floor, starting in 14 of 17 games.
  • The Bearcats are averaging 69.8 points per game, with opponents averaging 71.9 points.
  • The Team is shooting 44.4% from the field, 30.1% from three, and 69.8% from the charity stripe.
 
#AEHoops Notes (1.16.23)
Through a quarter of the 2022-23 #AEHoops season, UMBC and Binghamton sit atop the league standings at 3-1 after both teams swept action last week.
  • UMBC beat Maine last week to improve to 3-1.
  • The Retrievers have won three straight and nine of its last 11 overall.
  • Binghamton has won three in a row after posting a pair of one-point wins last week.
  • The Bearcats beat NJIT 72-71 in overtime on Wednesday before knocking off UMass Lowell 66-65 on Saturday.
  • Bryant improved to 3-2 and averaged 86.5 points in its two wins over UAlbany and UNH.
  • In all, six of America East's nine teams posted wins last week.
  • Bryant's Sherif Gross-Bullock leads the league in scoring averaging 16.9 points per game.
 
Conference positioning will again prove key for the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs. Every round of the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs will take place on the higher seed's home court and earning home court advantage will prove crucial once again.
 
The league champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship, where America East teams have won nine games all-time, including UMBC's historic upset of Virginia in 2018.

Player of the Week
Antwan Walker, Bryant – Sr., Guard, Washington, D.C.
  • Averaged 26 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week.
  • Shot 71 percent from the floor (22-for-31).
  • Scored a career-high 33 points and added 11 boards in a win over UAlbany on Wednesday.
  • This is Walker's second #AEHoops Player of the Week honor of the season (11/28).
 
Rookie of the Week
Jonathan Beagle, UAlbany - Fr., Forward, Hudson Falls, N.Y.
  • Averaged a 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists last week.
  • Scored a career-high 21 points against Bryant on Wednesday.
  • This is Beagle's league-best fifth #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor of the season.
 
Coming off winning it's league-best ninth men's basketball title, Vermont is the favorite in the 2022-23 America East Men's Basketball preseason poll. The Catamounts, who also claimed their league-record sixth-straight regular-season title last season, edged out league newcomer Bryant atop the poll. Vermont and Bryant combined to claim four of the six preseason All-Conference team members, which was also unveiled with the poll.
 
Binghamton's Jacob Falko is the lone returning first-team All-America East team member from last season on the preseason All-League squad. He is joined by UMass Lowell's Max Brooks along with Bryant's Charles Pride, a first-team all-NEC choice last year, and Earl Timberlake, as well as Vermont's Dylan Penn and Finn Sullivan.
