Saltsman Honored by Capital Region Track & Field Committee

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Greater Capital Region Track, Field, and Cross Country Hall of Fame has announced its first class of high school award winners.  Among the inaugural class is University at Albany freshman Alex Saltsman.

Saltsman competed as a thrower for Fonda-Fultonville High School.  Saltsman recorded a personal best mark of 190-01.00 in the discus throw, the furthest in 15 years since Columbia's Emory Parsons threw 192-05.00 in 2007.  The mark stands as the third-best in Section II history, behind Parsons and section record-holder Andy Bloom from Niskayuna, who threw 202-09.00 in 1991.

Saltsman won the Group 2 discus throw and the shot put at the 2022 New York State Outdoor Championships, and won the state Federation title in the discus.  In total, Saltsman competed 14 times in the discus in 2022 and placed first 12 times.

The other three high school honorees in the inaugural class were LaSalle boys' distance runner Gitch Hayes, Stillwater girls' sprinter and long jumper Gianna Locci, and Mohonasen girls' sprinter Zionna Perez-Tucker.

The high school award selections recognized the top two boys' and girls' Section II track & field athletes of the previous year, and were made by a panel of track & field coaches within Section II.
