Men’s Lacrosse Announces 2022 Schedule; Season Tickets on Sale

ALBANY, N.Y. – Following a return to the America East championship game in 2021, the University at Albany men’s lacrosse team has announced its full schedule for the upcoming 2022 season.  The schedule features road games against Yale and 2021 national runner-up Maryland, as well as the first-ever meeting with Penn, and the first-ever home game against Syracuse.  Four of UAlbany's 2022 opponents held top-25 rankings in the final 2021 national media poll.

Season after season, we have consistently played one of the top-tier schedules in the country, testing ourselves against the best our sport has to offer. But in my 22 years at UAlbany, I cannot recall us playing a more challenging schedule than what we will this year.
Head Coach Scott Marr

Additionally, 2022 season tickets for men’s lacrosse are now on sale.  The team will host all six home games in Tom & Mary Casey Stadium after playing on John Fallon Field in 2021, and will welcome back fans at full capacity starting with the team’s home opener on March 2 against Crosstown Rival Siena.

The Great Danes open the 2022 campaign with two-straight games on the road, starting first at Cornell on February 19.  The Big Red have not played since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the 2020 season, at which point Cornell had won its first five games of the season.  Cornell opened that season against UAlbany, and secured further victories over High Point, Ohio State, and Penn State, rising to #2 in the national media poll.

Next, the Great Danes visit Drexel, renewing their rivalry with the Dragons after not playing in 2021 for the first time since the Division I era series started in 2003.  The Dragons finished the 2021 season ranked #12 in the national media poll after finishing the season 10-3 and in the NCAA Tournament First Round.

The Great Danes host their home opener on March 2 against Crosstown Rival Siena, playing the Saints for the first time since 2016.  Saints' head coach Liam Gleason, a former assistant coach of Scott Marr at UAlbany, enters his fourth season at the helm.

The program’s longest-running non-conference rivalry, UMass, will see its latest iteration played in Amherst, Mass. on March 8.  The Great Danes and Minutemen have met 21 times during UAlbany's Division I era.  2022 will also see the Great Danes renew their short-running rivalry with national power Maryland.  The Terrapins finished the 2021 season #2 in the national media poll after falling to Virginia in the national title game.  Maryland only played against Big Ten opponents during the regular season as part of the conference's COVID-19 protocols, but ultimately finished the season 15-1 with victories over Vermont, Notre Dame, and Duke in the NCAA Tournament.

The Great Danes' 2022 America East slate begins at home on March 19 against Binghamton, before a showdown at home with Stony Brook on March 26.  The Seawolves were one of the four teams in the America East, with UAlbany, Vermont, and UMBC, all but deadlocked atop the conference standings in 2021.  Following the two-game home stand, the Great Danes will visit UMass Lowell on April 2 ahead of the biggest game on the 2022 schedule.

vs. Syracuse
Apr. 7 - 7:00 pm
Series: 2-17
Streak: L2
Last: L, 8-13 at #9 Syracuse (4/8/21)
Our series against Syracuse spans an exciting 19 years, during which time we have played some tremendous games. This year, for the first time ever, we will bring the rivalry to Albany and host the Orange on our home field. Our fans will finally be treated to this highly-charged rivalry at home. I am anticipating an electric, jam-packed Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
Head Coach Scott Marr

The home game against Syracuse is two years in the making.  The Orange, who will finally make their first trip to Casey Stadium, were originally scheduled to visit for a game in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The game returned to Syracuse in 2021 but the original plan was restored for this season.

Syracuse featured arguably the nation's most formidable midfield in 2021, but finished the season 7-6 overall and ranked 11th in the national media poll.  The Orange debut a new coaching staff this season, headlined by head coach Gary Gait, who had coached the Syracuse women's lacrosse team since 2008.  Gait takes over for John Desko, who announced his retirement after 14 years with the team.

at NJIT
Apr. 22 - 7:00 pm
Series: 1-0
Streak: W1
Last: W, 18-8 vs. NJIT (4/24/21)

A quick turnaround following the Syracuse game sees the Great Danes pay a visit to 2021 America East regular season champion UMBC.  The Retrievers finished atop the league last season at 7-2, tied with Vermont but holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Catamounts.  UAlbany defeated UMBC twice, first at home in the regular season and second on the road in the America East semifinal round.

UAlbany and Vermont played three games in 2021, with the Catamounts claiming victory in all three en route to the 2021 America East crown.  In two regular season meetings, made possible due to the America East's COVID-19 scheduling protocols, Vermont held on for narrow, two-goal victories, but won by five in the America East title game.  The Catamounts were bounced in the NCAA Tournament First Round by eventual national runner-up Maryland, and finished the season ranked #15 in the national media poll.

UAlbany closes the 2021 America East schedule early this year, due to Hartford not competing, with their second-ever game against second-year America East member NJIT, on April 22 on the road.

at Yale
Apr. 24 - 12:00 pm
Series: 7-9
Streak: L3
Last: L, 5-10 vs. #4 Yale (4/19/19)
vs. Penn
Apr. 30 - 4:00 pm

In another first, we add Ivy League power Penn to close out our regular season. The high level of competition of this schedule prepares us for our conference play and tournament, and with a few wins, sets us up to be considered for a tournament berth.
Head Coach Scott Marr

Until 2021, UAlbany had played Yale every year since 2015.  Like Cornell, Yale has not played since the 2020 season.  The Bulldogs went 3-1 and were ranked fifth when the season ended prematurely.  After making three-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament First Round, Yale broke through and won the national title in 2018, and was national runner-up in 2019.

Penn and UAlbany will play each other for the first time in history.  The Quakers were ranked 17th when the 2020 season ended, and got one game in during 2021, a 23-9 victory over Division III Cabrini University.  Penn was a 2019 NCAA Quarterfinalist and won its first Ivy League title since 1984.

UAlbany went 8-5 overall in 2021 and 5-3 in-conference, earning victories over two ranked opponents and placing fourth in the final America East standings before upsetting top-seed UMBC in the semifinal round of the conference tournament in Baltimore. The Great Danes fell in the championship game to two-seed Vermont.
