Golden Apple

The Golden Apple Trophy - The prize given to the winner in the annual UAlbany vs. Stony Brook rivalry game

The Golden Apple

Dating back to 2015, the winner of Saturday’s matchup will receive the ‘Golden Apple’ trophy. In that time, the two archrivals are deadlocked in a 3-3 tie, with Stony Brook taking the latest round in the spring of 2021 by a score of 7-21. UAlbany has picked up wins in 2016 (13-6 in Albany), 2018 (25-23 in Albany), and 2019 (31-26 in Stony Brook). During the Golden Apple era, the Great Danes have gone 2-1 at home and 1-2 on the road.

Gattuso
It’s the Golden Apple game. The guys have really taken to it, it’s important to them. We lost it last spring but really want to get it back. We have to go out there and play a great football game and try to make it three in a row.
Head Coach Greg Gattuso

Scouting Stony Brook

The Seawolves head into the final weekend with a mark of 4-6, going 3-4 in CAA play. Wins on the year have come against Colgate (9/11), No. 14/15 Delaware (10/16), Richmond (10/23), and most recently against Maine (11/6). The team is coming off a loss to No. 8 Villanova a week ago, falling 14-13 on the road. The Seawolves were led on offense by star back Ty Son Lawton, who leads the CAA with 95.8 yards per game. Lawton recorded 19 carries and rushed for 71 yards. The Staten Island, N.Y. native has rushed for 70 yards or more in six out of 10 games played this season. He and Mofor are the conference’s top two backs, setting the stage for a great showing on Saturday.
