Danes Dominate on Senior Day

Score: UAlbany 41, Morgan State 14

Location: Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (2-8, 1-6 CAA) | Morgan State (1-9, 1-4 MEAC)

Short Story: The University at Albany football team dominated the Morgan State Bears on Saturday afternoon, 41-14 on Senior Day. The game was plagued by a weather delay as the teams went to the locker room at the half, delaying action by about one hour. Karl Mofor led the way for the offense, running three TDs in throughout the extended night. The defense stood tall all game, with DE Jared Verse recording two sacks in the outing.

Twelve Great Danes were honored pregame for Senior Day. On the offensive side, the team recognized linemen Critt Johnson and Jahkele Bascome, running backs Karl Mofor, Caylin Parker, and Joshua Garvin, quarterback Braeden Zenelovic, tight end LJ Wesneski, and wideout Mohamed Jabbie. On the defensive side, lineman Ibn Foster and defensive back Tyler Carswell were honored. Rounding out the group were special teamers Dylan Burns (kicker) and Tristan Sokach-Minnick (long snapper).

Key Stat Lines Coach Greg Gattuso on the Game: "It was good to get out in front and play well early. The first half we really dominated, we played very well and took advantage of mistakes. We were able to come out with a really good win, two in a row now… This is always the hardest day of the year for me [senior day]. We had such a good group, and to see them go out there and get a win like that is special."

Coach Greg Gattuso on the Seniors: "These 12 gentlemen have been incredible for our program, and I'm proud to call them all Great Danes. They absolutely deserve recognition for their accomplishments. As their head coach, I truly appreciate their hard work and dedication to this football team."

How it Happened:
  • After forcing a three-and-out on defense to start, UAlbany looked to have muffed the ensuing punt before a penalty (kick catch interference) was called against Morgan State– setting up the Great Danes in favorable field position.
  • The Great Danes took advantage of the short field position, scoring on the next drive thanks to a four-yard run from Karl Mofor. UAlbany converted twice on fourth and one during the drive to take the early 7-0 lead.
  • On Morgan State's next offensive possession, the team's punter mishandled a snap on fourth and nine – resulting in a turnover on downs deep in Bears territory. UAlbany would punch it in just a few plays later when Jeff Undercuffler found Ian Renninger for a four-yard strike, increasing the lead to 14-0.
  • On UAlbany's next possession, Undercuffler found TE Thomas Greaney for 73 yards – taking the all the way down to the one-yard line. Senior running back Caylin Parker would finish the job, punching the ball in to put the Great Danes up 20-0 (PAT missed) – his first TD of the year.
  • Momentum for UAlbany was paused in the second quarter at the nine-minute mark, when a Great Danes drive was cut short after a rare fumble from Mofor.
  • Roy Alexander pushed the score to 27-0 thanks to a wide-open 23-yard reception late in the second quarter.
  • With 32 seconds left on the clock before the half, UAlbany marched down and scored once again before going to the locker room, making the score 34-0. Mofor would end up rushing it in from one yard out after Undercuffler ran it all the way to the one-yard line on a 19-yard rush the play prior.
  • The UAlbany defense held Morgan State to just 27 yards at the half, 31 yards through the air and -4 yards on the ground.
  • The game entered a weather delay after the teams went to the locker room at halftime due to lightning in the area.
  • After the long rain delay, Morgan State scored on their first possession coming out of the locker room. On a fourth and two, the Bears' Romello Kimbrough found a yard to punch in the ball from 17 yards out.
  • UAlbany pushed the lead to 41-7 with Mofor's third rushing TD of the afternoon in the fourth quarter.
  • Morgan State's Kimbrough scored his second of the TD late in the fourth for the final score of the game, making it 14-41 Great Danes.
