Great Danes Fall to Stony Brook to End Season

Score: Stony Brook 36, UAlbany 14

Location: Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (2-9, 1-7 CAA) | Stony Brook (5-6, 4-4 CAA)

Short Story: The University at Albany football team fell on the road to rival Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon, bringing the 2021 season to a close.

Coach Greg Gattuso: "We didn't show up physically in the first half. Mistakes that haunted us in the early parts of the season, with giving up points, were very hurtful. We knew we were going to need to score points to win the game, but a fumble at the five-yard line, a punt-block, those are misses that are hard to overcome. It's disappointing, I feel bad for our seniors. Our effort level wasn't what it had been and Stony Brook wanted it very badly."

Key Stat Lines How it Happened:
  • Stony Brook drove down the field immediately to start the game. Ty Son Lawton's first run of the game went for 44 yards into UAlbany territory. The drive would eventually be capped by a 21 yards strike from Stony Brook's Tyquell Fields to a wide-open Tyler Devera for 21 yards and the score.
  • Stony Brook added on their next possession, driving another 65 yards before settling for a field goal. Angelo Guglielmello knocked it through from 33 yards out to put the Seawolves up 10-0.
  • With 8:36 on the clock before the half, UAlbany's Undercuffler was rushed in his own end zone and attempted to throw the ball away. He was called for intentional grounding, resulting in a safety on the play to put Stony Brook ahead 12-0.
  • On Stony Brook's very first play after getting the ball back from the safety, Fields found Shawn Harris Jr. for a 67-yard TD strike across the middle to extend the lead even further – 19-0.
  • Trying to reach for a TD, UAlbany's Alexander fumbled the ball within Stony Brook's 10-yard line with just a few minutes remaining before the half, ending what was a promising drive for the Great Danes.
  • At the start of the second half, Stony Brook's Jaylyn Stover blocked a UAlbany punt that was returned for a TD. The recovery and score was made by the Seawolves' Jayden Cook.
  • Joey Carino entered the game at quarterback for UAlbany during the second offensive possession of the second half. The Great Danes capped the drive with a touchdown – with Karl Mofor finding the edge and running it in from a few yards out. Carino was 2-5 on the drive for 41 yards, with another 11 coming on the ground.
  • On the first play of the final quarter, Stony Brook hit a 32-yard field goal to push the lead to 29-7.
  • Ty Son Lawton scored his first of the day at the 8:41 mark of the fourth quarter, making the score 36-7 in favor of the Seawolves.
  • Karl Mofor scored his second of the afternoon late in the fourth, pounding it in from four yards out. It was the final score of the afternoon.
